OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Recounted the flock. Grandson counted 40 total 9 roosters 31 hens. Out of the 31 hens we got 28 eggs today. My 3 silkie hens have not layed any eggs yet. So I call this a good day. My silkies look bad compared to the fluffy ones posted on the silkie thread but non the less they are extremely friendly and loveable. I plan on adding more brown egg layers RIR or Golden Buff. I also need to raise my price to $3.00.
Took some pictures of the combs of some of my hens, I am still trying to figure out what breeds I have . I ordered the brown egg layers from Meyer Hatchery last May and a straight run of cochin so I know all my roos are coshin. Will have questions after I upload the pics.

I live in Chillicothe, Ohio. We just got our first six chicks. Soo cute! Can't wait to watch them grow and personalities come out. We are in the process of figuring out out coop arrangement.

. Make sure to have extra rooms when you build. I'm entering 3rd spring of chicken world and planning to add on the coop already. I thought I had plenty room for 10 chicks initially (coop size 10x12x10' high, with 12x24 run) we added few more last spring now We got new 15 two week old chicks joining them in few weeks.

My best suggestion for a chicken coop is something I learned on this website...a poop board under the roost, with edges and filled with Sweet PDZ. So easy to clean, just like a cat litter box, keeps the smell down, and keeps the rest of the coop quite clean. I used to have to clean the coop quite often, now I only clean spring and fall, and in fall, it's not really cleaning but adding more straw and chips for warmth. The heated water inside the coop in winter makes more mess when it leaks a bit, than the chickens do.

We are making a movable (by tractor or backhoe) coop that is 10x4.6x8 with cantilevered nesting boxes. The coop will be 2' off the ground making total ground space in the run 10x10. We are planning on making 10x10 sections that can be added as needed and reomved for moving.:)

Definitely planning poop boards and sweet pdz. Think they are an amazing idea.

I agree on the poop board with PDZ! Makes cleaning a breeze. We put our poop in a bag & add to our corn field.

our night roost is the only roost, it's on top of the nests and we had to put a ramp up to it. I want to revamp the coop interior, move the next boxes down and over to where the roof is highest, so I can have the roost in the middle of the board. Right now the roost is an extra 2x4 on the edge of the board. Put in the double board so the dominant hen and rooster can sit higher than the others. Two ramps up to the roost so the dominant ones can't block the others from the roost. Yes, I know how evil they can be, lol.
