5 Tetra Tints
8 Welsummers
2 Blue Splash Marans

Wow. 0-39 in 2 months. You're not messing around. lol

To the person with chicks dying after getting them from the hatchery.

I have just started raising Freedom Rangers in addition to my egg layers.

1st batch of 125 I lost several due to "natural causes" several to my stupidity (ran over them with the chicken tractor) and several more due to my stupidity... thought my dogs would leave them alone.

The natural causes were probably from pasty butt and/or stress from shipping.

2nd batch- 100- only lost one as a chick and that was when I was moving them, then lost 2 the first night in their new pasture area.

3rd batch- 150- haven't lost one yet.

Only difference- After the first batch, I added Apple Cider Vinegar to their initial 10 gallons (2 5 gallon buckets with chicken nipples) of water.

I was told that Mother's Vinegar is the best but Heintz ACV seems to have done the job for me. Anecdotal? Perhaps, but it has worked for me and I will continue.

Amount per 5 gallon bucket- a couple glugs.

Hi all,

My name is Kirsten and I live in Morrow County. I've had chickens for a year and a half now, and it's been a real adventure! I have 14 chickens at present of various large fowl breeds. I have 3 hatchery buff Orpingtons that spend their summers broody and I like to indulge them since they won't be denied! I'm always on the lookout for someone within driving distance that sells pure-breed (any breed is fine, but anything popular is better), large fowl hatching eggs. Anybody? Thanks!

I know there is a guy there in your county in morengo that raises buckeyes. They are a large fowl heritage breed established right here in ohio. His name is rick presley. If he doesnt have any I'm sure he can find you some.

Will they have birds for sale there? I'm about 20/25 minutes from canfield.
Yes, there were birds for sale. I apologize for not answering sooner. I've been off line working in the yard, garden, and running errands. Were you able to make it over there?

Thanks for the shout-out, Josh.

Yes, I do live in Morrow Co. as you might be able to tell from my nickname here at BYC. I just got started in chickens this year and only have a flock of pullets and cockerels at this point. We've raised turkeys the last three years for 4H and decided to branch out this year into chickens. While I don't have hatching eggs, there are plenty of contacts here in Ohio who might. The American Buckeye Club's Breeder Directory lists the Ohio breeders first: http://www.americanbuckeyeclub.org/Services.html I would start with either Ann Wood or Jeff Lay. Either one of these are willing to travel and meet you for a pickup. I got my first batch of Buckeyes from Ann in Plain City and Jeff brought some more up the the Cardinal Center Campground for a swap during the last trap shoot.

I don't know if they have hatching eggs, but if they don't the next person on the list I would try is Robin Rau. All three of these are reputable breeders of high quality Buckeyes and if they don't have what you need, they'll help you find what you're looking for.

We have a 4H meeting this afternoon and I'll ask at the club and see if anyone has any purebred LF eggs available. There are a couple other 4H families in the norther part of the county who show poultry as well and I can send you their contact information by PM if you're interested.
