You have a choice when you order chicks from some hatcheries, to vacinate or not. If you choose to get your chicks vacinated they recommend that you do not use medicated feeds as it will negate any effects the vacine might have. If you choose not to have your chicks vacinated then you are supposed to feed them the medicated feed. With all the possibilities of what can go wrong with chicks until they reach a certain age, it would be wiser and easier to have the hatchery vacinate your chicks before shipping.

As to the situation with your husband, since he made the bet publically and made the attempt to embarass you in front of friends, I would make him pay up and then drop the subject.

Not only would I get the cages I'd have a big ole' brass plaque put on them that says, "I TOLD YOU SO" or "I WAS RIGHT"
