Okay--Kids are sick--Chick Question

I always have hand sanitizer near the chickens because even though I head straight to wash up with soap and water after doing anything with them I still have to touch doornobs, etc. on my way there so I use it just for precaution. Maybe your kids would at least put the sanitizer on after messing with the birds? Just a suggestions. I don't know if that is why they are sick but it couldn't hurt. I hope everyone gets better soon!

My guess would be Norovirus - also known as the cruise ship stomach bug. Keep the kids hydrated with little sips of water or 7-up until their tummies can hold it down. Start them off on solid food with crackers or rice - just a little bit every few hours until they're feeling perkier.

Good luck!

I've had Salmonella from a resturant. Oh boy, do I *wish* it was diarreah and cramping. It was the kind where you vomited for hours on end, that was almost 2 years ago, and I will never forget it. That being said, knowing that its possible I can get it from my chicks.. This girl takes no chances!!

With 3 and 5 y/o's it's more serious. As Engteacher said keep them hydrated. If you can, call a professional. But most viruses go away as long as you keep them drinking and eating VERY LIGHT...homemade (chicken) noodle soup. My family is sitting here sending you healing vibes.

Yeah, I think it is much more likely a virus, but you will want to get them checked for Salmonella if they aren't getting better quickly or if they seem especially sick. Hope they are on the mend!

Thanks everyone....texted a nurse from the ped. office that I am friends with...said that a stomach thing is going around...the hives, gave some benedryl and he got better. He has so many allergies it could have been anything. Thanks again for all your kind words!

We keep a big bottle of hand sanitizer right next to the brooder and I make my daughter use it whenever she is playing with the chicks or the brooder. I also use it after changing their food and water. I am not one of those Mom's that carries the hand sanitizer around squirting it all of the time either. I also make us wash our hands after too. It doesn't hurt to be cautious in this case. I am extra careful because I am 7 months pregnant too and don't want to end up with salmonella.

Just keep a bottle there for them to use and if it is the chicks, that will help a lot.

You also have to rember that we get chicks when its spring time and we go out more often and are around alot more people,so no telling where it came from.
