***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Was trying to catch up as i am eating lunch. Been moving guineas around all day, they sure dont like being caught. Tried to tell them they are going to a bigger & better place--- for some reason they still want to fight the move! In 3 hours i only moved 8 birds!!!! But it is mainly due to the fact I am putting a few in a cage & listening for the boys- girls. Putting bands on the girls legs, very fun day @ my place. Dh is working late @ rent houses so kids & I will be eating leftovers after cheer practice. Then going to the bookfair @ school. Pretty sure I am Not going to want to cook after I finish going through these birds & at the rate I am going I won't finish the birds today.

Those look like some fancy chicken pens! We only have one pretty coop- and that was from when we lived in town. Now coops are functionally & not fancy. Don't think I could ever convince dh that my birds need a pretty pen. Maybe I could tell him prettier pen makes prettier eggs????

Hated to read about the chicken chasing dog! Mine don't think chickens are very fun, but when all 3 of mine are together they like to play guinea chase sometimes. Guineas are much more fun since they spend the day running in circles chasing each other. The dogs want to play chase too. I bought a set of shock collars that can be controlled with a single remote. Now chasing guineas is no fun. I have never caught my dogs chasing birds on their own, only something they will do when they are all together.

Ksane good job on the pens. I never thouight about doubling the lattice to get that effect. Good thinking!

Upzdaz my daughter let the hen keep the first six eggs, she marked each one with a pencil. After those six she took away the fresh egg everyday and kept it unrefridged . When the hen finally went setting she gave her back all the newest egggs and took away the marked eggs. I think hers layed like almost 3 dozen before she sat. Funny thing was when those eggs hatched she started laying again in a week and went setting again aftyer laying only five or 6 eggs. The roo raised the chick!

If you don't collect them, she will likely lay a few more and then go broody. If you don't want her to go broody, keep taking them away.

OK, here's a little nest I made for her that is hopefully more comfortable than the bottom of the cage. It's just a small, plastic saucer that goes under a flower pot. Will see if she likes it.

I marked the eggs with the date they were laid. She laid one a couple of weeks ago that's still in the fridge, but I didn't think that one would be useful. It sounds like your daughter's hen decided she'd done her part by laying eggs and sitting on them for a month, so it was the dad's turn to earn his keep with the chicks.

I was eyeing the fancy rubber boots at the tractor supply, but decided to get the cheap black ones at Wally World and some paint and make my own fancy ones.

How did your fall planting go? Mine are all up, some doing better then others.

Great looking pens!

MIL's tests results are in and it's some really nasty arthritis putting pressure on a nerve under the shoulderblade. The heart and kidney doctors concur that she needs to see a specialist to do therapy and give cortisone shots. Neither doctor thinks she sould undergo surgery at her age. Looks like she will go home from the hospital tomorrow. She has had shots in her hip and back before and has had good results.
Hubby had steroid shots in his back last Tuesday and has been having severe cramping in his legs and hands...enough to affect his sleep the past three nights. So orthopedic doctor wants him off his Crestor (cholesterol med) and his primary care physician wants him in the office tomorrow for bloodwork to check muscle enzymes and calcium levels. Will it ever end?

We did have a nice visit from Carl and Stephanie and I did get the garden weed-wacked.
Opps...a phone call..........

Now we are on our way to the emergency room at Shawnee because his doctor has arranged for bloodwork to be taken at the lab there....be back in a while........
