***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Went to the grocery store and they had some *almost* overripe avocados for pretty cheap. Picked up a few and made guacamole. Of course I ate one first, but eh... win some, lose some

Found an old threadbare pillowcase in my closet, dumped a couple cups of dried corn in them and put it in to soak. Gonna see if they sprout, if they do then that's what I'm going to do with the 10 lbs of dried corn on the cob my mom gifted me with (she saw them, thought they might work for the "grand-chickens"... don't ask). I also have a 25 lb bag of wild bird seed that she gave me last week. It's been a dry year, I'm sure they'll appreciate the greens. Especially when it gets cold.

Les, I love your stories. That's really funny about the manager, and you needed that 8 hour break anyways right??

I have a cousin that is a dairy farmer and he says that he sure wishes that the internal clock on those cows could be set. Instead of being at the gate at 4am they are there at 3.

The only change that I make is to carry a light with me at all times. The winter stuff is always behind the seat of the truck. I never know when the phone will ring and I have to make a service call. But I can put up my A/C stuff for a while. I will start working on them again about Feb. for the summer season.

That is what I have been doing this week, winterizing one of my customer's trucks. I have the tractor about finished now it's time for the trailer which should only take one evening. Then I have all of the pick-ups to do and I am already getting bale spears in to work on.

Oh and I can't forget, I need to build a new well house. The old one had a cement floor that was in places less then an inch thick. Wonder why it didn't hold the walls up?

Actually one of the gifts that my mother passed to me is insomnia. Today been up since 3am and probably won't go to bed till about 2 or so. Going to sleep in till around 5 if I can. Just can't sleep more then a few hours. Perfect for either mechanic jobs or driving.

If you take a cookie sheet and potting soil you can sprout either wheat or rye. Once planted cover with an old pair of nylons so they can't pull the seed out. Works well till they start trying to scratch in it. Once eaten down a bit remove it and let it grow some more.

I have seasonal insomnia. The darker it is, the longer I'm awake. By mid-winter, I'll be lucky to get 3-4 hours/night (right now I get about 5). They really don't know what causes it, but I get my best sleep when the sun comes up. Unfortunately that means that if I don't wake up right when I'm supposed to and the sun rises, it's like trying to wake the dead.

James calls me a vampire without a sunlight allergy.

We were taking the Southern route one time and I was getting tired but daybreak was coming and I knew that I would be fine once the sun came up. Just outside of Alamagordo NM I pulled off the road to wait for the sun There are mountains in back of Alamagordo, which I'm probably mis-spelling, and as the sun broke over them it really made the lights of the town brilliant. Of course it was still in total darkness.

On that trip I was coming through the White Sands Missle base And in my mirror I saw a plane flying low and getting lower. As it got closer I saw that it was a B-52 and he was flying about a 1/4 mile off the highway and it seemed about 100 feet off of the ground. I was close enough to see the bomb bay doors open and a crate drop out of the big plane. Then the pilot pointed it straight up and the black smoke just flew as he gained speed. I bet it didn't take a minute to be out of sight. Now that was a thrill. Glad he wasn't dropping a nuke!!

Just once I would like to get behind the wheel of one of the road trains in Australia. Slim Dusty is the singer and I often listen to his songs. If you like country music check him out.
