I'm at a loss here on your timer setting , please explain. Why would would you want to turn a light on your fowl at dusk and have it go off 4 hours later catching the birds on the ground ,in the dark ,and them not being able to see to fly up on the roost? Now if you are wanting an early hatch, and wanting to give the birds 12 or so hrs of light to trigger egg production , I can see having the lights come on 4 hrs. before daylight. Personally, trapping my birds on the ground is not a practice that I would advise anyone to do . Like I said , please explain , I sure would be interested in learning what is to be gained by doing that.

I think she means the timer turns the light on just before sunset, attracting the birds to the lit up coop at night then the light goes off 4 hrs after dark.

I will have some 'gift' birds with me at Shawnee. Just ask me about them. No-snooze, annimated alarm clocks...perfect for the person with everything. I'm easy to find....I'm usually around my show birds or my sale birds...my cell phone number is posted on my sale birds.

And the best part isn't even any of that. It's that they don't ACT like chickens, honestly they act like tiny undersized dogs. They *want to just BE with you. No shuffling around getting into things, no trying to hop off and get away. They're a dream come true for someone that wants something to baby and fuss over. The more you fuss over them and interact with them the more loving they get. Channing is a true part of the family now. I talk to him more than I do any other breathing creature on a daily basis. Not sure that reflects well on me though

I run my timers so that the birds are woke early by the lights and transition naturally to thier roosts with sunset. I only run the timer for a couple hours each morning. 4 am -7:45 am. This allows for that natural transition, and teh birds will stay inside the lighted area during the early morning, and as light naturally comes out they will travel out to thier runs and do thier thing.

That is an excellent reflection on you and the breeder, and the breed. I have always said they should write prescriptions for poultry for those experiencing excess stress and anxiety. A natural non-medicated soothing form to bring a person back to reality.

Also if you run a red heat lamp it offers the necessary light for your birds so they aren't left in the dark. I run a white light on a timer for egg production and keep the red heat lamp going 24/7 during the coldest days and nights. Edited to add: My white light is set to come on two hours before day break in the morning and two hours at dusk. Each month, I reset the timer to adjust for the shorter day length.

Morning everyone,
Sounds like lots of folks will be having a blast at the Shawnee Show. Unfortunatly for me, I won't be able to attend this year. Too many conflicts on the schedule. I have tried to figure out how to squeeze in an hour or too there but it just isn't gonna work out this time. I will be there in spirit though. Have a great time!
To the newbies, most of the "POOPS" shirts people are wearing actually just say People of Oklahoma Poultry Swap with a picture of a rooster. I think only the shirts from the initial year actually say POOPS.
Have fun!

Really chilly this morning but no water was frozen in the barn. The cattle tanks outside had a crusting of ice. The boys are feeding and putting out hay now. We had a cow drop a heifer calf three days ago just before the cold hit. Bothe are doing great the the baby was up showing her legs this morning. So fun to watch at this age.

I put on a crock pot of chili to slow cook overnight...sure smells good. For lunch will make a big pan of cornbread and set our chopped onion, cheese and picante. The boys can serve themselves.

Today, I'm sewing on Christmas presents and tying off a memory quilt for my MIL. I made three of these when Roger's brother died and am just now getting them tied and sent off. I used Bill's cotton shirts for the blocks.

For Saturday, I'll wear a BYC shirt since I don't have a POOPS shirt and will definitely be there for lunch! Someone suggested bringing cash for buying birds. Makes the transaction easier. I'm assuming we need to bring our own cages/crates also if we plan on buying anything.

Michael...Great photo of Macy and her buck. Wow...what a prize...of course, the buck looks good too.
