Quote: Sooner, thank you! I found them! There were only 6 left so I got them all. I'd put sand in 2 crock pots with removable ceramic pots (put the sand in the pot itself) and then put a big metal bowl on top of the sand. One of them got the water too warm so that one won't work. The other one seems to be fine. You can barely feel that the crock pot itself is warm and the water is still real cold but I'm sure it won't freeze, we'll see tonight.
But I've got the lamp sockets kit and the 6 cookie tins. We also got plug in receptacles and are going to use 14 gauge outdoor extension cord instead of Romax to run electricity to the pens against the side of the house that aren't in an actual building already. Do you think that's alright to use instead of Romax? It was 1/3 the cost. My husband's just going to splice it like you do Romax and put a receptacle in each pen and wire it into the outlet on the end of the house. I don't think mine will bother the cords at all. Hopefully we'll have it done by tomorrow night. I didn't know how bad it was going to make me feel to see how thirsty they were this morning because their water had frozen overnight
Now I have to scramble and fix the problem because I put it off too long.

Last year I blocked the North and West winds and had a heat lamp in each coop. This year I have the wind break again but will not put up lights unless we have one of those bad storms again and I'll just use a regular bulb and coat combs.

And the best part isn't even any of that. It's that they don't ACT like chickens, honestly they act like tiny undersized dogs. They *want to just BE with you. No shuffling around getting into things, no trying to hop off and get away. They're a dream come true for someone that wants something to baby and fuss over. The more you fuss over them and interact with them the more loving they get. Channing is a true part of the family now. I talk to him more than I do any other breathing creature on a daily basis. Not sure that reflects well on me though
That is an excellent reflection on you and the breeder, and the breed. I have always said they should write prescriptions for poultry for those experiencing excess stress and anxiety. A natural non-medicated soothing form to bring a person back to reality.
Some of my students should thank my chickens - The birds just might have indirectly saved their lives.
I have a very heavy gauge extention (cord that runs really big lights on towers) cord that run to the main coop & smaller ones that take it from there to the other coops.
I did that scramble & things will be so much better for you once you get them done. I have the heated dog bowls in the larger coops but you can't beat the cookie tins in the smaller pens & coops.
I may be making a couple extra this winter just to have on hand.
