***OKIES in the BYC III ***

You guys the next may I suggest you wear the rubber gloves from the hospital? That is what I use when cutting peppers.

I’ve got a good RiR rooster for my NHs & RiRs but still no Cochin Rooster.
SO... I am looking to obtain a standard sized Cochin rooster.

I would definitely prefer a blue but a black, red, or any dark color would be acceptable. I am willing to drive an hour from Lawton to pick one up any farther than that and it would have to be a really good roo or I would have to be desperate. I am using my Cochins as brooders so if he comes from a broody hen that would be a big bonus.

If you can help with a roo or info on who to get one from please PM me.

Since I am talking about my Cochins this seems like a good time to show them off...

This is all four hens.

This is Mary brooding some eggs.

This is Mary from a couple days ago with her RiR chicks.

This is Dark Eagle.

This is my favorite bird, a blue named, “Jaws”.

The pictures in the second link in Sooner's post are easier to see. I often have to turn my yolk with a spoon to find the blastoderm. I don't know why mine land sunny side down; just luck, I guess.

We have eaten cornish X before. They are the broiler industry standard, and it's the breed you're getting if you buy chicken in the grocery store. We usually just send our extra large fowl roosters to freezer camp, but when I saw some already-grown broilers at an auction, I bought them out of curiosity. I will post pictures tomorrow after I've baked the hen. I'm thinking about stuffing. I have some onions and granny smith apples. If there's a loaf of bread in the freezer then I'll make stuffing.

A note on tenderizing: Processing should have happened closer to 6 lbs. but was postponed due to the hen's respiratory problem. To improve the texture of the meat, the hen will be refrigerated in a vat of brine (cold water, kosher salt, and sugar) for 10 - 12 hours. Look for pictures around dinner time tomorrow

I'm having soup with the neck and gizzard tonight. Time to add some rice and carrots!

@Kassaundra I learned that going to the bathroom, as a guy, right after cutting peppers isn't a good idea either.

I have had two EMS calls one was a young 20 something guy who called an ambulance when he did just that. Another who sprayed his own "self" w/ mace on purpose.

Poco, how many have you successfully "C"ed? I can't wait to learn this spring. I got a few more instuments. One thing I got was a reverse tweezer that I am going to attatch a jump ring, or somthing like that to, was thinking that might help w/ extracting the top one.

Hoog, your Cochins are beautiful! I hatched out 8 LF Cochins last July (1 died), I've got 3 boys and 4 girls that I wouldn't part with for anything in the world! I certainly understand why you love them so. Mine are 6 months old now and huge, I love my babies

The very first one was already processed. I didn't want to bumble through, so I used a cockerel who was headed to freezer camp anyway. Number two and three are alive and well. Both are too old to be good capons, but I used them as subjects because I figured we'd have them for supper if I made mistakes during the C-ing. Because they are older subjects, their parts were easier to identify. I won't have a young group until the middle of February.

I just bought a Bovie Cautery Kit - the DEL-01 High Temp with 4 heat tips. I think a cautery will prevent slips because minute bits of tissue missed with the elevator and forceps will be cauterized. It should be here next week, so I may use another yard bird as number four to make sure I can use the cautery before my February group is ready for "the change."

I looked it up online, more affordable then I imagined. Can you use the tips more then once? Like for the whole batch you are C'ing? I couldn't find how much the replacement tips cost.
