***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I can take some pictures tomorrow. I have a table and a chair at a comfortable height with a bright desk lamp. I use cinder blocks on the floor at either end of the table as anchors for the restraints rather than using bricks as weights as some websites and literature suggest. I don't know how much stretching a little cockerel can take, so I'd rather just adjust a rope to fit each new bird on the table. I'm thinking about swaddeling the next one to see if a restraining jacket makes sense. It might be calming.

Thanks I've read the descriptions including using the brick as a weight, I just can't picture it from the descriptions. I agree I wouldn't want to do it like the man in the video, but it still is impressive.

I read a poultry publication, from the 20s, I think, that had a story about a lady who was going to lose her farm after her husband died. She learned to caponize cockerels and then hired out several times a week and was able to keep her home. Back then a few dollars went a long way. She was able to get more for her extra roosters, too, so any extra time she had could be invested in improving her own flock for sale.

He everyone. Got an email from a local farm that will no longer be farming locally. They lost most of there land when the fire went through the mountains & Medicine Park. They are selling a few items that I thought some here may be interested in. They haven't updated their site in a while but I am putting their link in case any one wants to contact them--- http://www.phelanranchcompany.com/ & to view their photo gallery, to maybe see some of the coops & such they are selling.

Here is a list of some things they have- (the egg mobile is a huge coop they pulled with a tractor, not the prettiest, but would be nice to have one like it IMO) --- I would like to get some of the broiler shelters, but I am passing for now. DH feels I have enough pens.

EggMobile -

The mother ship is up for sail... I mean sale. Here is where we kept our laying hens during the spring, summer and fall months. It is ready to go with nest boxes, feeders and a slick watering system that uses 55 gallon drums and a nipple/bell drinker watering system. If you are just interested in the John Deere Chaise underneath, that can be sold separately as well. The best quality about our eggmobile is its mobility. The floor is slated and covered with chicken wire so the chicken manure falls to the ground beneath. You can move it around as often as you like spreading manure and allowing the chickens easy access to fresh pasture.

Our Price: $800

Last night at my market gardening class the speaker was in his 70's & was talking about paying your kids for farm helping with work as a tax deduction. DH asked what was an adequate wage. The man said his dad always told him when he could do the job of a grown man he would pay him as a grown man. The guy said by the time he was 12 he was doing a grown mans job and making 45c an hour & he was one of the better paid farm hands. Dh went home & told the kids he would pay them 45c an hour for farm work & my kids laughed & rolled their eyes.

So got my entry form for the Northeast Oklahoma Poultry Show. I was so disappointed, it's a bantiy show
