***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Joe how do they compare in size to the coronations? I'm anxious to see the other colors to. Next time take some pics!lolIf you don't quit aquiring more birds your going to have to find a bigger place then that ridge top!lol.

PoCo how many trees do you think you will need to retire on? I like it when people plant trees and plan on getting to see the fruits of their labor. So many people grumble that" whats the use,I'll be long gone by the time it grows up". That doesn't have to be the case and if we all felt that way and didn't plant trees it would be a terrible injustice for our future generations.

Got my first order for EE bantam eggs for the year, guess I need to go and start wrapping them.

Those are pretty chickens, Joe. They remind me so much of bare legged Cochins.
I fixed 2 rubbermaid tubs today for my bug collection. I get the Hissing Cockroaches tomorrow. The egg slats got hung up in Dallas so they'll get here tomorrow also. I was hoping to get them *before the bugs got here. I only bought 20 of these guys, I want to see how hard their shells get before I ordered too many of them. I know I want Dubia for feeders, they'll be the main ones. I'm going to order 800 of them in a week or so, I can't wait. It'll be months before I can start feeding them but the chickens are going to love them! So are my big fish. Kass, I'm so excited!!

Awesome, you are going to be "The Woman" , Goddess of everything good and holy in the chicken world.

There is the Guy Rose auction N. of the Perkin's "y" on 177 about 5 miles S. of Stillwater, East side of the road. poultry starts at 9am as does the junk sale and hay sells at noon if they have any. There is usually a good selection of both eggs and birds there and there are often chicks and rabbits too. It's a lot of the same sellers from week to week and quality of birds is usually good but as with all auctions it's buyer beware. It's every Sat except holidays.

Last time we went I picked up a fairly nice boat trailer for $35.00, it will be converted to other uses. And a really nice pair of bantam Shamo.

Then there is Mary's swap meet on 23rd and Midwest Blvd, I think, The critters are in the N.E. corner of the lot and early Sat. and Sun. both many BYCers can be spotted there. Plus you may stroll around and find some antiques too, you never know.

On the first Sun. of the month there is a consignment sale at the Jones Livestock auction. There are usually a few antiques there but I have stayed away from them because I don't know the prices. Mostly it is vehicles, mowers, fencing and things like that. There are stll bargains to be had if one is careful. Could come up with some building materials, shelving or whatever.

Tonight in market garden class we covered an hour+ in pecans. Story is most places are sold out of plants because pecan prices have doubled in the past 2 yrs so demand is high. Best pecans for recommended - Kanza - Pawnee & Lakota.
Atwoods does have pecans- but they advised those are not worth growing so don't bother.

Evening Okies,

Spent half the afternoon on the phone talking to pecan growers. Most are already sold out for this planting season. Last year's drought ruined so many trees that they simply don't want to talk about it. Prices for young trees are high.

We were supposed to be planting ten seedlings each year to meet out goals for retirement. Both DH and I have been so busy that planting pecans was not possible for either of us. I figure I've got a month and a half to plant, and I'm two years behind, so I've arranged to get twelve three-year-old trees with native root stock that are already grafted with either Pawnee or Kanza. I've got a grower looking for some smaller container trees for me, which will be a little easier on the pocket book. If he can get them before the end of February, then we'll be on schedule again with a total of twenty trees in the ground.

Does anyone have native pecan trees? I'm trying to get five to ten pounds of raw, whole, in-the-shell native pecans so that I can start them in containers. I can pay for the nuts and shipping. They travel better than hatching eggs

We have 35 huge trees and have not had a good pecan crop since 2004. We had our trees harvested that year using tree shakers and vacuum equipment. Only two trees have produced since then.
How far apart are you going to plant your trees? We have been told by the Oklahoma Pecan Assn president that the best crop will come from 4 trees per acre. Spraying for worms in the nut and for black scab is important.
