***OKIES in the BYC III ***

cowboy, it is pretty common, they are called silent heart attacks, and as someone mentioned they are more common in women. It is certainly a wake up call, but like others have mentioned it can be managed and many people live very long after their first. My Gpa had a massive (not silent at all) first one in 1978 and had multiple smaller including silent throughout the next almost 30 years of his life. The key is to identify your risks and manage those as best you can (lifestyle choices, food, exersice etc), find a good cardiologist who you can communicate well with and trust, take the meds as prescribed (not hit and miss b/c you don't think you need them) and don't stress about the rest. About the triglicerides, I have a friend who is a normal weighted, very active (horse trainer), female around 50 years old, she had her cholesterol checked on a fluke just to get her husband to do it. Within an hour of her Dr. getting her test results back she was in the ICU her cholesterol levels were well over 1000 and triglycerides over 10,000. She tried prescribed cholesterol lowering meds, diet (she did go vegan) and alternative diet supplements, for her it takes all three approaches to keep it in check. Even being overweight for your numbers to be so high it is most likely a combo of what you eat, and how your body uses it, likely gentetically your body doesn't process fat and carbs the way it should. Be proactive w/ your health, research the problems, look at the different solutions pick what will work for you and stick w/ it, if it doesn't work try different solutions until you find what does work for you. Dr. Higgins who was my Gma's cardiologist recommended the South Beach Diet to all his pts.

elwood, have you tried meletonin? You can get it inexpensively at any discount store w/ a vitimin section. It is the natural sleep "chemical" your own body makes, doesn't make you groggy in the morning and if your insomnia is related to low levels of your own bodies meletonin it might help. The reccomended dose is one pill, but I take 2, and my husband takes 4 it works very well for both of us.

Hello. Don't know if anyone here remembers me, it's been oh 2 1/2 years :p We gave up our chickens so we could make our house presentable to sell and now I'm out on five acres in Guthrie, like I kept talking about back then. I get to have chickens again! Yeah!!!! Anyway, Hello to all those I don't know and How's it going to anyone who might remember me :)

Welcome back, I sure remember the name but I am having trouble putting a face to it. Did you live in Yukon? Didn't you come to the first or second POOPS? Hope I am a remembering right. Anyway welcome back. Lot sof thing s have changed on BYC and the Okie thread but we are still going strong. This is our third thread. We outgrew the original.

I saw a news article on TV last night don't remember if it was Tulsa or OKC, but appearentlly there was a home invasion the criminals attacked the homeowners in their bedroom and the homeowners fought back and won. First of all kudo's to them for that,

but here's the "rest of the story" they fought back w/ "an empty alchohol bottle, a chain saw, and a harpoon"??????? Okay I'll give you the empty etoh bottle, but who keeps a chainsaw and harpoon in the bedroom??????????

Good morning. I have another question. How long can you leave chickens unattended? Our kids will be a 2 1/2 hour drive away, and we will want to spend a night with them on occasion. Is a night away a problem? Also, what do you guys do when/if you take a real, say week long, vacation? Are there people out there who you can pay to take care of your farm animals?

What is your set up like for preditor proof, run or pen?

For a week vacation (which we rarely do b/c of funds) my father and mother in law can be trusted to lock them up and make sure they have water. There are automatic doors you can install that will shut them up at night and let them out in the morning, and many kinds of feeders and waterers that last for a week or more.

I am just researching at the moment...no chickens yet. But these are things I need to look into. I figure that is the plus of planning ahead. I will have to have a VERY predator proof pen, as my Shiba Inu will be a big concern in that department.

We have great dogs, so we just open up the eggmobile so they can forage if they run out of feed, make sure the birds, goats, and dogs have plenty of water, and the dogs have plenty of food to get through whatever period it is. A week might be problematic, but we have no trouble leaving for up to a 4 day weekend, and a regular weekend to visit our daughter in Texas is a piece of cake.

We never worry about predators. Ever.

The more preditor proof the run / coop the more peace of mind you'll have while being away. I would definately look into the automated door options especially if you don't have anyone local that could take care of them. If you are handy w/ tools there are plenty of plans on line and if not there are several places on line where you can buy the whole system ready to go, just have to screw it onto your coop.

Buster's "preditor protection" is the best by far!!!!!! He uses livestock gaurd dogs. Only sucidal preditors set foot on his property.

Going out of town for the night I do worry about my birds- but honestly they are fine. For a long weekend or week I would have someone stop in & check on them. A responsible teen (one that enjoys showing animals & such) works great. Another thing I have done is have someone stay here for the weekend. As long as the big chores are done anyone that is half way responsible can handle keeping the feed & water full. We have lots of city friends, and coming to stay a weekend on the farm is like a mini vacation to them.

Spent the AM working in the dirt. Have 1 more plug tray of tomatoes to pot up after lunch. Took a quick count & I have 85 trays of 18 each seedlings. I still have more to go-- but looks like I will be running out of space very soon. I am very excited at how well my artichokes have done-- I had rhubarb that I started from seed & it is growing really well too. I plan on putting the rhubarb in the shade- since it hates heat. It is just an experiment since DH loves rhubarb. I am starting to smell the tomato plants!!! Cant wait to get everything in the ground!
