I've been spending my time in the yarden and working on building the new recycled coop. Making plans for a new small batch of chicks. Also researching fruit trees to see what I'm going to plant this year in the way of trees.

You need to pick a permanent spot, the roots will live many many years (like 40 or more). I dig a trench the depth of a shovel blade, soak the roots (crowns) overnight in water then when I plant them in the trench I mound a little hill of dirt in the mound and nestle the crown on top of it spreading out the long roots in all directions and cover w/ dirt, I space them so the root ends are about 1 inch apart. Chicken poop is good b/c of the high phospherous (just not directly on the root) a normal slow release fertilizer will work mulch it well. It takes the roots a couple of years to mature. The first year you can only harvest for about 1 week, each successive year you can harvest longer by the 3rd year you can harvest about 8 wks.

58 Days to POOPS![]()
how many BCM do want to get rid of?We have spent the day outside with the birds. I did some weeding in the raised beds of peas and we lost two of my barred rock chicks so far to the cocci. I have 2 or 3 more acting weak. I have put chick saver in their water and medicated them all with the Corid. Oh and found that for $17 at S&S feeds in Shawnee. Great people there, they had great prices on some other things we needed as well. Hopefully we don't loose to many more of the chicks in the outside brooders. Do I need to clean those brooders a certian way before using them again after this?
Feed store told us to treat for 5 days with the chicks does that sound right?
We also went through the birds we have decided not to breed so selling some cuckoo marans and some black copper marans if anyone here is interested. The Cuckoos are clean leg and the BCM are feather leg. It will be nice to open up some of the coops if we sell these. Here we build all these new coops and still don't have enough room, lol.
Well gotta get back to the yard work. I need to see if the radishes and turnips are ready to pull or not. I can't wait to have fresh turnips!!!

A disclaimer, the following statement is meant to be funny, and not a political statement of any kind.
After last night at work I'm thinking they should bring prohibition back, but replace etoh w/ legalizing the old "mary jane". Think about it for a minute, an evening spent w/ "mary" results in staring w/ fascination and awe at the colors refracted by the light catcher in the window, and a big bag of cheetoes. While spending time w/ etoh results in getting a beat down, or engaging in a beat down, making an absolute fool of yourself, endangering the safety of first responders and a very expensive trip to the ER and or jail. It was a loooooong night.
