***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Afternoon, Okies!

Sorry I wasn't able to post about the Coweta sale yesterday. I didn't get home until about 12:30, at which time I put my goats in their little house, rounded up my free-range roosters and put them in the barn, and fed the cats in the shop. I've just uploaded photos, so here's some information on the sale:

The equipment (coops, brooders, feeders, etc.) sold first, beginning at 6:00 p.m. I bought an old commercial brooder with a thermostat. It's got a little rust and needs to have some ancient barn smudge cleaned out of it, but it looks to be in good condition. I paid $65 for it and feel like I got a good deal. Hatching eggs were next. The average price for eggs was between $3.00 and $5.00 per dozen. I brought home a dozen Dominique eggs, a dozen Turken X Cornish, and a dozen Easter Eggers. The EEs are marked Aricaner, so I'm assuming the seller means Easter Eggers. The only rumpless birds I saw at the sale were roosters who must not be the alpha males in their previous chicken yards, so I doubt many in the group are raising true Araucanas. Hen prices were wonky. People paid a minimum of $13.50 for POL Red Stars, but only paid $9.00 for really handsome Black Australorps. Some lovely Swedish Flower hens sold in the high $40.00s. I was outside when the chocolate muskovies sold, but I bet they went high. Roosters sold higher than I expected, averaging $5.00 - $7.00 for what looked to be roughly a year old. Peacocks sold low, starting around $35.00 and topping out at $50.00. I didn't pay much attention to the prices people got for bunnies, but I'm remembering a few went for about $11.00.

On a frustrating note, two of my cages disappeared. I have a feeling that the really young kids helping at the sale didn't understand that the cages were the property of the seller, not the buyer. I'm sure it was just a big misunderstanding, and I had a chance to talk to the auctioneer about it, so I have a strong feeling that the next sale will run more smoothly. The auctioneer is going to replace my cages, so all is well. One of the cages that was taken also had a new baby feeder and baby waterer in it. DH figures the person who bought my shamo babies had buyer's remorse and felt he was entitled to my cage, feeder, waterer, and the chicks because he'd paid more than he wanted to for the chicks. Come to think of it, my Swedish ducks went high, too, and that's the other cage that was taken. The Swedish Flower hen cage didn't disappear, though, so maybe I'm reading too much into this. I'll stop whining now and post some pictures.

i'll check with him, i don't think there would be a problem- but i'll check anyway- i'll get some beetter pics too...

Do the chest freezers have lids? And how big are they? I may be interested if the size is right, I need a place to store extra horse feed and those are ideal, of course only if your FIL is willing. Right now the extra sacks get stored in my garden shed.... and I need the room in there!

DH just left today to help his Mom move from Skiatook to south of Tulsa area and he has the trailer with him. He'll be back in 1-2 weeks and can pass through there on the way home. I'll just have to talk him into leaving enough room on the trailer when he brings stuff home from Moms. She's giving us her lawn tractor with large sprayer and other attachments.

Our mower is tired and needs to be replaced and she's downsizing from almost 20 acres to a small yard.

Is that a barrel laying there in the bottom picture? I could take that too if nobody else has claimed it yet.

No where near done with my list but fell like I have made some progress, brooder building cleaned up and re-organized. Started cleaning the garage, 2 loads of laundry washed dryed and put up, swept, mopped, vaccumed the house. Fed and watered all the birds. Now wating on Guy to get here so I can meet our postal driver who is going to let me get some stuff that came in.

Well today has been a busy day! Got pens all cleaned out with new straw put in. Got our Oxine yesterday so cleaned all waterers, feeders, and sprayed all the coops down with it. So far no more sick birds but hubby and I decided last night we would rather spray the pens down every day for the next two weeks than take a chance another bird will come down sick. Kurt has just about finished his coop. So might move Jack's little banty cochins in there until we can build them a pen. Right now they are in quarentine for 30 days. But Kurt's pen is far away from all the other birds so they will have more room there than they do now. Went to Harrah auction last night and got 8 guineas, yippie!!! They will have to stay penned for the next month but then I will have 8 more little tick eaters, lol.

We hope to make Newcastle tonight but hubby got a call at 7 this morning from his mom. His mom is having electrical issues and needed him to fix it for her. So if he gets back from Eufalla in time we will be there.

Well gotta get back outside to week the radishes, turnips and peas. I want to put in a few more rows of peas. The ones I put in last month are starting to bloom so making me itch to get more in the ground.

I'm almost certain that one of my Komondor females is pregnant. Hopefully next month we'll have happy healthy puppies that will be AKC registerable and have champion lineage from both parents. Komondors really are a great breed of dog and are quite rare. We couldn't find anyone in Oklahoma with AKC pups, so we bought ours in Iowa, Missouri and Kentucky. I love them!
I hate to ask if they are rare, but how much do those pups run?

Even the warm weather stuff (toms, peppers, okra, cukes, squash etc..)?

I tried to start seeds this year I do have a few puny plants, but may need to go ahead and purchase the majority of my toms and pepper plants again this year. I hope to have my greenhouse built this year, do you heat yours? How early can you get stuff started in it in this area?

I've started my tomatoes and peppers with my uncles full blessing (if there were ever a man that knows peppers and tomatoes it's him), they have been on my porch for the last couple days and are growing quick, at least the tomatoes are... my peppers were a bust, bad seeds I guess.

Hi all! I have yet to post in the Okies in the BYC. I thought when I did I’ve have a clever story to open with or something of substance to share.
Well, that’s not the case LOL.
I am reaching out to any softies out there that need an EE Roo to add to their flock. He is very sweet with the hens *wink wink*. He is 5 ½ months old and his name is Sparks. He is tame and was raised on our laps. He would cuddle on my husbands shoulder while he sat in his chair watching TV. You’d have to know my tough Army stud husband to appreciate how extraordinary that was, and that also explains why he won’t be in the freezer.
He is beautiful, as you can see by the pictures. Unfortunately he is being picked on by my Delaware rooster, whom is the BIG CHEEZ around these here parts.
I have one other EE Roo that I am sure I will have to keep, as he has twisted toes. He also picks on Sparks! That one may end up in the freezer. He was also raised on our laps and that has been his saving grace so far!

Let me know if you need an EE Rooster for non shake and bake purposes.
If I have placed this post in the wrong place, please don't rip me a new one

just let me know, and I will gladly edit it with some clever opener or something of substance!

His tail feathers were damaged.

Welcome!! If only I wasn't roo rich at the moment :p

On the menu.

My sophisticated kill station, complete with state-of-the-art kill cones.

The help.

And the finished product.

All in a day's work.

We did the milk jug thing when we butchered ours a few years ago, smartest thing anyone has ever come up with.

sorry you lost the cages, I'm glad they are going to step up and replace them tho

Trying to decide whether or not to go to Newcastle. There is just such much to do here! Hope everyone that goes finds something they can't live without and gets a lot for what they brought!

Taking a break, realized I hadn't ate anything all day!! I have one more row to plant & I can move on to other things.

I did get the grape vine moved, feed store & a few other things but my list continues to grow.

LOL @ Buster on "how much they run"

Oceans you might want to PM her since she isn't on the board much. I would be interested to know how much she will sale them for also.
