Afternoon, Okies!
Sorry I wasn't able to post about the Coweta sale yesterday. I didn't get home until about 12:30, at which time I put my goats in their little house, rounded up my free-range roosters and put them in the barn, and fed the cats in the shop. I've just uploaded photos, so here's some information on the sale:
The equipment (coops, brooders, feeders, etc.) sold first, beginning at 6:00 p.m. I bought an old commercial brooder with a thermostat. It's got a little rust and needs to have some ancient barn smudge cleaned out of it, but it looks to be in good condition. I paid $65 for it and feel like I got a good deal. Hatching eggs were next. The average price for eggs was between $3.00 and $5.00 per dozen. I brought home a dozen Dominique eggs, a dozen Turken X Cornish, and a dozen Easter Eggers. The EEs are marked Aricaner, so I'm assuming the seller means Easter Eggers. The only rumpless birds I saw at the sale were roosters who must not be the alpha males in their previous chicken yards, so I doubt many in the group are raising true Araucanas. Hen prices were wonky. People paid a minimum of $13.50 for POL Red Stars, but only paid $9.00 for really handsome Black Australorps. Some lovely Swedish Flower hens sold in the high $40.00s. I was outside when the chocolate muskovies sold, but I bet they went high. Roosters sold higher than I expected, averaging $5.00 - $7.00 for what looked to be roughly a year old. Peacocks sold low, starting around $35.00 and topping out at $50.00. I didn't pay much attention to the prices people got for bunnies, but I'm remembering a few went for about $11.00.
On a frustrating note, two of my cages disappeared. I have a feeling that the really young kids helping at the sale didn't understand that the cages were the property of the seller, not the buyer. I'm sure it was just a big misunderstanding, and I had a chance to talk to the auctioneer about it, so I have a strong feeling that the next sale will run more smoothly. The auctioneer is going to replace my cages, so all is well. One of the cages that was taken also had a new baby feeder and baby waterer in it. DH figures the person who bought my shamo babies had buyer's remorse and felt he was entitled to my cage, feeder, waterer, and the chicks because he'd paid more than he wanted to for the chicks. Come to think of it, my Swedish ducks went high, too, and that's the other cage that was taken. The Swedish Flower hen cage didn't disappear, though, so maybe I'm reading too much into this. I'll stop whining now and post some pictures.
