***OKIES in the BYC III ***

It appears that my brain is short circuiting this morning. I can't seem to get the multi-quote thing to do what I want to do so I'll post a different way.

Oakieridge - I am moving to the lake house at Lake Eufaula. It sits on two lots. There are a lot of trees on part of it and is near the water. It's not a huge amount of property but enough for me, my cats and chickens. Eventually I'd like to get more land somewhere else, but this fine for now.

Oceanseve - Congratulations on your new (or new to you) house and glad you survived the selling/moving process. It's gruelling.

RetiredArmyWife - It's tough getting a house ready to sell, especially when you have a little one to keep up with and other responsibilities. I don't have children at home anymore but just getting and keeping everything done is tough. You're right, it's hard to show a house with all of that going on. Lookers want to see a house in pristine condition, it seems.

One of the things I like most about the house at Lake Eufaula is being able to see lots of stars. There are lots more to see there than in the city and they're beautiful. It's nice to sit out on the porch at night and see them all. I wish you luck meeting your goals so you'll be able to enjoy them too.

Thanks. My grandfather has a place in Eufala, my husband has been there to fish and says it's great.

Looking for a few hens in OKC. Does anyone know where I might be able to find some? This will be our first time raising chickens and I am super excited. The coop is built and ready to go, just need to find some chickens. I have done lots of research but any advice would be great. Thank you :)

Welcome! Newcastle would be a good stop if you aren't picky about what you want. If you get more specific I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction

I have nobody to watch the dogs or cats. Nobody to watch the 4 year old either. However you definitely had it harder with all those babies! Glad you got it sold!

:( Sorry you don't have more help. I put the cats in carriers every showing and just kept them in the car. Not fun for them, but I'm shocked at how many animal haters there are out there!

What experience I've had with luffa...it is a more tender vine than most gourds. It is more like a cucumber vine. It does need a trellis to help make the luffas straight.

I have just set my seed, planted in pots to set out when it is a little warmer.

A sweet potatoe vine can be trained to go up and over a short trellis...while the root grow in the ground to be dug in the fall. It is very heat tolerant also.

I'm planting sunflower seed along the fence of one of my pens this year to block the west sun and provide seed heads for the birds in the winter.

I picked up sunflower seeds yesterday! I found this neat idea on pinterest, you plant them in a circle then guide them together as they grow to make a sunflower house. I hope it works! I think the girls would love it

I hear you on that...And the drive always seems longer when you have children to entertain....are we there yet?

I always ask back "I don't know, ARE we there yet?"

Okie ridge 1 more egg has pipped. The ones that pipped last night 1 hasn't made progress & when it pipped part of the membrane goop came out when it pipped--- that usually doesn't happen. If he doesn't make any progress tonight I may take him out to investigate. So hard not to touch the eggs!!!! Normally guineas batch super fast compared to chicks, but coming 3 or 4 days early isn't normal. Poor guineas get confused so easy.

We have pre germinated corn seed to put outside the coop, along with sunflowers & jerusalem artichokes. I do have birdhouse & luffa gourds but I am battling DH on that one. He is scared the gourds are going to continue to climb past the fencing & up top to the poultry netting & tear up the $200 net that took us forever to get in place. I think I can encourage them to vine back downwards, but not sure if it is worth the risk. DH would be very upset if we had to redo that net. It was a PAIN to get spread over the 30x55 area.

With my corn, I believe I will pull the ears when I catch them forming, I know it is a waste. I just wanted the tall grass. I don't want the corn calling the coons outside my pens!!! I already had the corn seed, but next yr I may look for Sudan grass. Suppose to grow nice & tall & thrive in our area.

Hey Nana and Kasaundra, have either of you ever tried planting sweet potatoes in bottomless barrels with alot of packed straw and some compost on top, Kas that would give you some hight for your vines to start at on your pens and when season is over dump out the barrel to hI read something about this the other day, was thinking of trying it too. Lynn

Thanks for the suggestion Nana, that is different then the method I tried last year I'll try that.

I love the sunflower teepee idea!!!!

jcatblum there is also sorghum, tall and grassy, thrives in heat drought tolerant and provides seeds for the chickens.

On the cats I would request a professional cleaning of the entire house prior to closing. And honestly that would be only if I fell in love with the house from the curb. More than likely I would walk out the minute I saw cats. Don't hate animals, but I am allergic to cats. It isn't worth the headache. My renters with cats pay an extra $15 a month per cat plus a $250 deposit, since I know I won't be able to go in & clean the house after they move out. Our nicer houses I won't even allow cats at all.

I forgot to report back in the fly bags I bought. They have a pheromone inside the bag, you add water hang the bag up & flies are attracted to it. The bag is working to attract flies well. I still have flies, but I only hung 1 bag up to start with. I will hang more bags this weekend. I ordered the bags online, but actually seen them at Walmart. They are about $5 a bag.

Yep sorghum sudan, many people use it for windbreaks for the garden. That is what I was referring too. If I happen to see some seeds @ Ross I will pick it up, but I didn't make an effort to locate it this season.

Lynn sorry if I wasn't clear-- it is poultry aviary netting from 3T products. It is rated to handle snow & ice. I ordered he 2 inch heavy knotted 50x100 pc. It has been awesome. We ordered it a yr ago & after getting it in place on 4 pens I wouldn't hesitate to order it again. I had yet to have a rip or tear in the net, even had a skunk get tangled up in a piece on the ground & the skunk couldnt get out & didn't tear the net. I wasn't thrilled about the $200 purchase, but honestly I don't think I could ask for a better product. It has yet to endure an ice storm, but it does handle guineas constantly flying into it & doesn't give.

If those bags are the same ones we used last year they will start to stink so make sure you replace them frequently because that smell is worse than anything I have ever smelled (and I have 4 boys! LOL) But they do work great!
