***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Saturday the run will be finished!! 2 peach trees planted today, and heading in the AM for all the parts for the fence!! So excited...

And it looks like we are going to be getting a little baby fainting goat - for the grand total price of free!!! My son fell in love with him at a good friends home and she said he was the last little one she had left so told him to get a place ready and he will be heading to live here.. never thought I would have goats..... how is it chicken math works on other farm animals also? Gearing up for the auction next weekend here in town - cannot wait to see what just might be there that I just *need*.

What kind are you looking for?

I have heard great things about Buff Orpingtons. I found two down in Slaughterville/ Noble area and am picking them up tomorrow! Im so excited I can barely stand it. Im so happy I joined this site. What do you all use in the coop? I have straw to put down, do I need shavings? Will they make their own nest or do I put hay in the nesting box for them? I have been looking at this site a lot and am happy I figured out the thread. Any advice would be wonderful, thanks for your help.

Welcome to our group. Let us know a little about yourself and your chicken interests.
We have a lot of enablers here to help.
I have some Cuckoo Marans hens for sale! See what I mean. Enablers, gotta love us!

Hi there. I am in OKC and am excited for my fist two hens. I found 2 Buff Orpingtons and will get them tomorrow. My husband is putting the finishing touches on the coop as I type this. I feel that im prepared and ready, just have some random questions that you all can probably answer for me. What do you use in the coop as bedding? Will they make their nest themselves (we have a nesting box)? Our coop is 6 foot by 3 foot and the cage surrounding it is about 8 foot by 8. Maybe I will post a pic. Any beginners advice is greatly appreciated

KatieCov, I like straw in the runs and pine shavings in the coops. They love eating the seeds in the wheat straw and digging around in it. The shavings just seem to work better for me in the coops, not sure why I like them better but they do seem to stay drier than the straw and they smell good. Every few wks I just toss pitchforkfuls of straw over their fences into the other part of the yard and replace it. You'd think they hit the food jackpot every time I put new straw down.
I've never had Orpingtons but people who have them seem real happy with them. I like the feather-legged or bearded ones, and if they've got extra toes that's all the better :)

Ok, great! I have straw that we use for the garden so I can use that in the run. I also got some hen feed from the local garden store. I have read that they also like to eat kitchen scraps and broccoli. Can I post pics on here?

Robin - The guinea eggs are resting and will be set tomorrow. I have a plan to work with Vesta and the keets, so maybe we'll be able to keep guineas again. I'm going to make a monster effort. I had a tick on my arm yesterday. Not cool. I need my bug patrol back.

I hope the veggies sprout for you. When the peat pellets look tan instead of dark brown, they have dried out. Try to keep them watered but not drowned. Before you plant your young plants, put them in a shady place for a day and the next day give them more sun. You will have more success with transplanting if they have had a chance to acclimate to being outside.

While the plants are still tiny, pencils stuck in the spaces between the egg cups make nice tent poles for your cling wrap cover. When the plants are a few inches tall, they won't need the cover any more. Let me know how they do. I started a carton of tomatoes and a carton of bush beans today because I'm sure we'll have some disaster that kills (or eats) what I've already planted outdoors. I've seen the bunnies conspiring at dusk.

Someone on this thread says pine sol sprayed in the run gets rid of flies, not sure of the particulars though, dilution and how often to spray.

That was me, dilute very little, use like a garden sprayer you would use with insecticide, herbicide, or fertilizer, spray the run, coop walls and all. I don't know why it works was told to me by folks who raise hogs and they use it to keep flies out of the hog houses and it works.

Hey Nana and Kasaundra, have either of you ever tried planting sweet potatoes in bottomless barrels with alot of packed straw and some compost on top, Kas that would give you some hight for your vines to start at on your pens and when season is over dump out the barrel to hI read something about this the other day, was thinking of trying it too. Lynn

Haven't tried that befor, but sounds intresting.....may have to try that.

Carl got me started on pine sol for flies...and I love it...they don't light on surfaces where the pine sol has been sprayed.

We put hay in the nest box and a little sulphur dust, I use shavings on the floors...It fluffs easy and seems to stay drier. I like the small shavings not the large. It works nicely into the garden when composted after it comes out of the coop. I stopped using straw...just didn't like the way it seemed to pack.
