Just got back from OKC, Dept of Ag...went through the NPIP tester class. Glad it's over...and my hen I took is too. Not everyone there followed instructions and didn't bring a bird. The instructor told me, "Well, guess your hen is going to get a few pokes." My response, "She's got two wings, after that she goes in the truck." Not my fault people can't follow instructions.


On another note, the instructor said that if there is enough people interested, he was going to do a class in Tulsa next month...

PEOPLE OF OKLAHOMA POULTRY SWAP "2012" OFFICIAL EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

WHEN: Saturday, May 5th 2012, start time 8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.

WHERE: CHOCTAW CREEK PARK, CHOCTAW OKLAHOMA. The park is located on Harper Drive in Choctaw. It is six miles North of the KOA, where we have had events in the past and about seven miles North of Interstate 40.It is about one quarter mile south of NE 23rd Street in Choctaw. We will have more detailed directions later.
WHO: All members and participants of the "OKIES IN THE BYC", their families and invited friends. The underlying theme this year is "SIMPLE IS SUPER."

1. FOOD: This year we will be featuring another delectable pot luck dinner. We are going with the idea of a giant picnic.Hamburgers, hot dogs, hot links, some bbq etc. will be provided. Additional foods will be needed. (Chips, potato salad, salads, baked beans etc,)
2. Poultry: The usual fanatical buying/selling/swapping of poultry. There will not be a live auction this year, although depending on what we receive, we might set some items up in a Silent Bid Auction.
3. Raffle: We will be holding the raffle as in the past and it will be sure to entice all members of the family.

4. T-shirts are available to order.

5. There will be lots of fun and fellowship with our great Okie friends sure to entertain. We encourage those that want to set up displays with their interests to please do so. We are setting up different time slots where plan to have discussions with question and answer sessions. If you want to participate on a panel or have ideas for the discussion please let me know. There are people that I have asked or will be asking to be on a panel to address concerns and questions as related to the aspect of owning and keeping poultry.
Several of our members have happily offered to give freely of their time. They will head up the following areas of interest. We also need additional volunteers to help with some of the areas that require more support, Please contact Monty (Buckguy20) or Carah (Sooner) if you would like to offer your services. For those that have already volunteered, I will be in contact with you..

NanaKat: Raffle. She will post about the raffle donations, please contact her with your items. Ideas for the Raffle: Chickens of all breeds & ages, Chicks, hatching eggs of all kinds, ducks, peafowl, rabbits, turkeys, quail, cages, waterers, feeders, incubators, wire, netting.
Arts & crafts, nic-nacs, and any other related items. Also,any fun type things especially things that appeal to kids.

there was like 20 when i went, largest class they had ever had.

ours was better than yours, we had everybody with chickens, one gal brought like 30 with her. wanted to get them all tested while she was there.

stupid that they wont let you have your stuff while you are there, gotta order it and wait on it.

Those that know iris, do I need to wait until fall to move them??? There are one batch I would really like to move now, they are through blooming, I meant to move them earlier this spring, before the bulk of the garden stuff needed to be done, but since our winter was basically spring I've been busy w/ the garden and didn't get the iris moved.

Iris is one of the few plants you divide and replant during the summer no biggie if they are still blooming just mix a light bleach water solution to dip them in after you divide to control fungi make a small mound the main tuber part needs to be partly out of the ground and the small feeder roots around the mound and buried, cut the foliage off like a fan to about 3 or 4 inches so it's not top heavy and next year it will bloom a lot better than when it's crowded, I would love to talk some of you all out of a few different colors and types I have a few and some day Lillie's also My Cannas haven't come on this year and my Hollyhocks aren't showing up I think those didn't make it through the heat last year...

This is another question I need help with...We live in the city limits and have our chickens in our backyard. We havent let them out of the run yet. I am worried they will fly over the fence. They are Buff Orpingtons and everything I have read says they are too large to fly too high. Is this true? Also, how do you get them back into the run or coop?

I have Buff Orpingtons they are great about not flying and always come back to the pen and coop as dusk unless my neighbor is shooting off his canon then they go hide in the trees for the night I told him the next time he waited till dark to shoot that thing I was gonna make him come find all my birds and put them up...

Its been a while since I've been by, but here I am...come to bragg about my big win. This past weekend was the infamous 'Cajun Classic Serama International' held near New Orleans. It is the 'Super Bowl' of Serama shows. Here is a picture of my biggest win....(actually, I lost)...This is Best of the Best Competition for Grand Champion...I didn't win, but got Reserve to Grand Champion. I also got Champion Malay Hen, Champion Silkied Cock, Champion Reserve Silkied Cock, Champion Silkied Hen. My little one pictured here weighs 10.2 Oz. Grand Champion belonged to Danny Bolding from Alabama.
