***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Oh, RetriedArmyWife-I suppose it would be entirely possible because the roos grab them by the top of the head to breed them. What makes him think the neck was broken? They're so floppy after they die and babies are so fragile anyway I'm not sure if you'd be able to tell if the neck was broken or not.
That is what I told hubby. He disposed of her before I saw her. So it's entirely possible she just died? I guess I knew that, but wanted a second opinion. Sorry to say the only dead chickens I have seen were from attacks, except for a chick we kept in the house and she was stiff when I found her. She was so pretty too.

My main goals today are to finish building and planting a couple of flower beds and moving 1/2 pickup load of horse poop to side dress as many of the garden plants as I can w/ it. I would also be tickled pink to plant a few more seeds in the garden, fill in a few spots and replant a couple of areas that didn't grow well from the first planting. I've already side dressed the comfrey and the new bamboo.

YIKES!! Strep is going around the schools right now. I have 2 nieces down with it now. Hopefully it isn't anything serious and she is back to normal soon.

She has never had strep before but has a doctor's appt at 11 this morning so we will know soon.

time to lose the tonsils, bet she has strep!

tell her iwanna know who she was smoochin with at the prom, less than a week later and now she is sick.

hope she feels better quick, no fun being sick when your a kid. heck it's no fun being sick when your a geezer!
When she feels better I will see if I can get an answer to your question! LOL.

I hate that everyone is loosing chickens, I hope that it gets better soon!

Last year I only had the Silkie batch from the hatchery and my 8 Cochins I'd hatched. I didn't lose any as babies. I've had a heck of a lot more chicks this year and have lost 2 babies for unknown reasons. I lost one of my most favorite birds of all recently & it put things into perspective. That was my worse lost yet and while I hate losing chicks it can't compare to how hard it was to lose one of my 2 favorites. So I'm a lot better at coming to terms with it when I lose one I hadn't had long. My biggest mistakes last year were mixing birds from different sources together at different ages. I don't do that anymore.

Well I don't really have the room to keep them separate.I keep trying to replace birds that are lost and its so much easier to find chicks. I made the mistake of thinking my NNs were big enough to get out in the chicken yard. They got out somehow and I lost them. Chicks sure are good at finding places to squeeze out. I loved my NNs. I have three more on order from Cackle hatchery.

the more birds you have, the more you are going to lose.

i have actually hatched about 1/4 of what i had last year and havent lost but 2-3 birds. besides the one i sat the 1 gal.waterer on, i couldnt see him, okay. wasnt my fault!

last year i lost a few, but if you figure the avreage i am probably running about the same either way.

lost 1 big bird this year for what seemed like no reason, then got to thinking about how long i had had him. he didnt die for no reason, he just died of old age!

You can fairly well tell the color they will be when they hatch. Keets with solid stripes will be heavily spotted (pearled); those with squiggly or broken lines will be partially pearled; and those with no stripes at all will have no spots. Even if you have no coral blue parents, you can get coral blues if both parents carry that gene. I know you can often get coral blues out of royal purples. Guinea color genetics are harder to understand that even chickens.

morning guys.... i have quite a group coming to the swap next month- question, if the roo is an ee, does that make all chicks EE's? i have a mixed flock.... like a brahma/ee chick, so he he an EE?

Hmmm, interesting question. If I mate 2 black sex links, the resulting chicks are not black sex links. I'm going to say technically, no. He would be an EE cross or Brahma cross depending on who he most resembles. Why do EEs always have to be the PITA?

We have a Brahma/EE X that I refer to as just that. (If I just say EE cross, they ask about the feathered legs). She's one of my favs.

She was an ugly child though.

Even though EEs can lay green/blue/pink(aka brown) eggs I think there is really an expectation of the blue gene being in the mix there somewhere. I've never met someone beyond thrilled that their EE laid brown eggs. Usually that's when they get upset because it's such a let down. An AM "should" have 2 blue genes and since EE's by definition are AM crosses, they "should" all lay blue or green depending upon the other bird in the cross. Further diluting the chance at colored eggs....well, what's the point of making a distinction? Just regular old brown egg layers.
