***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thanks for the info Betsy. We only have one coral blue, but lots of royal purples this yr. Maybe that changes things up. I seriously stopped expecting coral blues since I wasn't hardly hatching them last yr. I still haven't hatch a buff dundotte or a white this yr. hatched several of those last yr & this yr I have buff dundotte & white hens laying.

Oceans the chick was prob a wk or 2. I don't think she took anything more than 2 wks old to poops.

Army wife sorry you lost the hen.
Also hate hearing about the dog attack! Are the dogs still loose? Or are they now properly contained? My dogs run loose, but we are almost a mile from an other houses & if anyone ever told me my dogs were causing problems @ their place those dogs would be in their kennel or on the chain. I will say my dogs do chase the cattle, but only if they come to the fence line-- they quickly go tell them to get back to their side.

My girls will be home in 2 hours. School is letting out early for a funeral. This town makes me scratch my head, the funeral isn't for a child or school employee so I don't get it. They are having the funeral at the school. So what if the kids were suppose to have their annual field day & the highschool is doing semester test. I really want to go back to homeschooling & DH agrees. This school is a million times better than Lawton or we wouldn't had tried it, but I am so frustrated with the way things are done here. Oldest DD has there end of the yr filedtrip Monday for reading over a million words & they still haven't announced where they are going! Sorry for the venting..... Man the school makes me crazy! I only show up there now to pick up the kids or pay for lunches, since everytime I go I just get more frustrated. my kids prefer going to public school for the social aspect of it, when we were in Lawton & I homeschooled we had at least 3-4 events each wk where they had social time with others. I do think that would be hard to pull off here, chicken auctions would be there only social time. That & church but since moving we havent found a church that DH, me & the kids can all agree on. Seems if one girl likes it the other doesn't or DH doesn't. Only 5 more days of school then we have the summer to decide what we will do for next yr.

Planted the last 4 flats of tomatoes yesterday. Will plant some other seeds today. Still have a few flags of herbs I started that need permanent homes. Just can't think of where to put them that the chicken, goats or husband won't hurt them.

3 of my Ameraucanas came from MJ's neighbor, Jack. They've always been big and healthy and have grown up with my Dark Brahmas since I got them right after they were hatched. I think this Blue one is a male, theyr'e about 7 wks now. There's only 1 row in his pea comb (3 rows means male, 1 row means female) but given the fact I can see any comb at all I'm wondering if it's indeed a male. I don't want to keep them any longer than possible and get attached so I'm looking for a home for him (or possibly her). So it won't have to go alone I'll place the solid Black female with this one. I've got enough chicks that I think it'll be just fine to let go of a couple. If you want a picture of the solid black female I can get one. If this ones a male the blue egg gene is dominant so at least you'd get blue egg layers from his daughters. Hey-it's something! He/she had a huge beard when they were babies, the beard will be nice and puffy when the head/face feathers finish growing in.

Hey Mitzi - would you keep an eye out on your way around midwest for my light brahmas :( the 3 year old chased them toward the street, I thought they'd come back, but now I can't find them.

Oh shoot! Sure, I will. With all the loose dogs around here you may not ever find them.

A rose comb rooster over a straight comb hen. Will you get rose combs, straight combs, something in between, or a combination of each?

These would be banties if that would make any difference.
Been thinking of putting my straight comb RIR over my rose comb RIR, from my understanding I should still get rose combs correct? Depending on how pure the rose comb is? If we don't aquire any new LF in the next few wks I will put them in a pen together along with my 2 best single comb RIR girls to see what I get. I wonder about how pure the rose comb RIR girls are since they lay dark brown eggs. Not chocolate, but dark enough that I can tell them apart from the other ladies eggs.

I was reading the thread on comb genetics, but those threads always make my head hurt.

I hear you about the genetic charts making your head hurt. Been working on my genetic charts for the ameracochin project. Not only am I looking at combs, but also, feathered legs, colored legs and beards. Makes my ears bleed.

Good morning okies, well yesterday was every chicken lovers nightmare for me. someone had let their dogs roam free and they came over to my place about
6am and killed all my 2 month old marans and americaunas. There were 40 marans and 10 blue ams. As you can imagine im a little emotional about it. Lots of anger and some regret. You always have feel like its your fault, like you could have done more. On the up side I did hatch out 5 of my bantam blue americauna
So do you know for sure it was your neighbor's dogs? If so you can bill them for the destroyed birds, their homeowners insurance will pay for any damages. Of course their insurance company will also require that they contain their dogs, which they should have anyway. If they refuse you can always take them to civil court and sue for damages. This was the advice I received from the sheriffs department when I lost over 50 birds in one day to dog attack. The only thing is I never could find the dogs that did it.
Sorry about your loss, I know from personal experience how bad that sucks!
