***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well got home early from kiddo's practice and found a guinea that had somehow pinned itself under a mirror in their pen. It was once of the freerangers the mirror is attached to the fencing with wire but somehow the wire broke (probably by the goofy guineas that walk on top of it and look at themselves upside down). He isn't acting himself, let me pick him up. I don't hold out much hope. Put him in a dog crate with water and food and praying for the best. The mirror wasn't heavy but I know it is in shock. We will just have to wait and see.

The good news is that the eggs we stole from the wild guinea girl's nest are hatching. I have two pipped and lots more moving so know there are little babies waiting to meet this crazy little poultry farm. Hopefully we get at least a dozen so they can have their own little flock. If not I may have to buy more from Terron, lol.

Well off to clean the basement brooders those keets sure can make a stinky mess of their brooder rather quickly! Can't wait until they are old enough to move outside but that will be at least another 2 weeks.

yes, McGuyver!
Now I want to change my screen name on here!

Robin I hatched an egg a few weeks back that I repaired with scotch tape. It spent 18 days in the bator with tape on it. No problems. First time I ever tried it & it worked so I was excited.
Mitzi don't beat yourself up over the eggs. DH dropped our entire brinsea loaded full. 4 days before hatch. That was a devastating day! We all make mistakes in incubating. We know you would do anything to save the eggs or chicks.
I repaired one with pure beeswax once.

Before

After

It didn't hatch. Nothing hatched that time. I was gathering eggs when it was 114 degrees outside so I think my rooster was shootin' blanks. But it didn't grow bacteria either, so that's something, right?

it just gets me! these are due to hatch tomorow, some have been chirping and then the girls start fighting over nest boxes, found one totally crushed- one that maybe a third of the membrane is showing, and the other will be a miracle, it has a deep peck in it, but i put them in egg carton sections and put them in the brinsea, which has silkie eggs in it on day ten, don't want to mess those up... and then one hen has 1 hatched, 3 pipping, so i have her well protected- but i need to change how i do this with multiple broodies.

Lost one of my young madagscar to the storm the other night. Only hatched 11. They have been turned out in to a big pen for a few days. They go into their shelter during the day to be in the shade, but havent figured out they can sleep in there. When hail came the other night they were all bunched up in a corner. I got out there as soon as it let up, and put them in their shelter . One didnt fair to well and finally died today.

Moved some more roosters out onto barrels today to get them away from their ladies. Give the girls a little break. Bought some 2x4s. I have enough 2x4 inch wire to build about 6 more hoop pens. Need to get that done in the next few days. I raised a bunch of stags this spring and will need to start seperating them soon as they are getting to that age.

Robin, I thought my grown daughter and I were going to come to blows over this whole broody thing

I border on being petrified of hatching out boys and getting attached and not being able to part with them. I try to plan ahead if at all possible and don't hatch out more than I'd be able to house in case too many were boys. I tell ya-I'm still traumatized about giving Rebecca my Splash Cochin boy. (I tell you-I'm broken). Anyway-my daughter didn't pick up the eggs for way too long-like 5 days-in the Marans pen that also has 2 Russian Orloff girls in it who she discovered tonight are both sitting on eggs. Then-instead of just tossing them, what does she do??? She candles them and sees growing babies! So she starts back into the Marans yard with her t-shirt bulging full of eggs and she's going to put them all back under the Orloffs. Lord. I liked to never get those eggs away from her, and she's a grown woman lol All I saw was a whole 'nother yard to build for all the roosters that were going to come out of those eggs. I finally let her put 1 egg per broody back.

Oops! I bet he felt awful for your daughter! Jeez, I'm not so sure I could recover if I'd done that :-/ Poor Josh.

I hope the Guinea recovers. I don't know why they're so dang fascinated with mirrors! Our old Guinea boy is in love with the shiny metal toolbox and stands in front of it talking for hours.

I'm tellin' ya!

Kass - Today is day 10 for your hatch. I candled the 17 that made it here (#18 was broken), and I culled three clears. The rest have visible development. I will post another update when we get to lockdown. Remind me again, what breed am I hatching for you?
