***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My little Serama, Channing, got his own personal run today,it's 3'x10' (correction-2 1/2'x10'). He loves being outside when it's nice so now he can be out when I'm out there working in the yard and be safe in his own area. It's actually the walkway that leads into the Bantam Faverolles pen. It's surrounded on 3 sides by pens. Just a few more roof panels to put up and everyone will be shaded and protected from the rain back there. I just love this little bird :)
Going to catch up on a bazillion posts now!

Afternoon, Okies,

I just returned from the NUC pickup yard, which turned out to be an empty field in the Catoosa area. I mixed the bees a nice drink and let them glom onto my veil for a few minutes. Apparently I smell like "friend" or at least "benign entity," so they went back to exploring the hive body. It must have been uncomfortable to be locked in and then bounced around during the drive home.

I decided to save the sunflower design for my next hive. DH is concerned about me keeping bees and will not be mowing anywhere near the hive. I've done my best to explain that they won't "attack" the mower or its driver, but he's not convinced. I painted this first hive to match the house, neutral and friendly colors, so as not to draw attention to the fact that the bees are in residence. Maybe next year, when they are established and we've not had any negative bee encounters, DH will see more benefit to keeping these beautiful, beautiful bees.

Our white rock rooster has decided the juvenile tractor run needs to be guarded. He's been sitting out there all day, making sure the little delinquents don't get out. Too bad I can't train the rooster to keep the kittens out of my flower beds.

You were just up our way- we live near Catoosa with our hives and have about 15 hives near the Port at a friend's house as well. Maybe we will run into you at this swap meet we keep hearing about!?

Nanakat these are the the eggs I got at poops and they are already a day late and not one has hatched 20 out of 24 black coppers have hatched in the same incubator. I do not have a way to candle

Evening all, Hey Carl I have a question! As you know I raise large size Old English Games and I have a few Brown red hens, now if I take those hens and put them under a Blue Breasted Golden Duckwing cock will I get some Silver Blues out of them??? I know there is a difference in the Duckwing and Crow wing but will it affect this cross? I so want some Silver Blues in the large size!!!! I also have a Silver duckwing, should I use him instead? Lynn

Get a Mag Light Flash light and do it in a dark room!!! You can see if they are growing with that! Lynn

Not poisonous that I know about, at least they never hurt out goats, they LOVED them almost as much as persimmons, however if you milk your goats they will make the milk undrinkably bitter.
Thanks, Kassaundra. Some of the other things I've read have also said that while they are listed as poisonous, it's only the acorns in the fall that will give goats an upset stomach. We live in an area with hundreds of oak trees to the goats are going to get as many leaves as they want. Thanks for the info - makes me not worry so much - ha.

The Golden duckwing (e+ duckwing base) male over Brown red (ER Birchen base) females will result in some pattern in the offspring some will be silver hackled in the second generation (F1xF1) select chocks that are solid black including breast at hatch.

You will only be able to get Birchen looking females, no males in the F1 generation will be silver but could be golden. All of the offspring will veryt likely show some pattern to them with stippling and likely some of the males will have a wing bay as well. Use the best Golden male from the cross back over his sisters then you could get a Birchen male. Chick down selection will be critical to getting this right in the F2 and F3 birds
