***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well we spent the day getting the 2nd hoop house done. If I can get that last A-frame done next weekend I will be happy. I just have to make a stop at Lowes tomorrow to get the tarp to go over the top. Then the Cuckoo Maran chicks can move in.

Our hatch turned out well, we had all but 12 eggs hatch, of those 4 pipped but one at the wrong end the others just gave up I guess. I don't think that was to bad out of 50. The others are still in the hatcher I will give them until tomorrow but I don't hold out much hope for them. Next ones don't go to hatch until Thursday if I can remember to move them. Mom is having surgery that day at 7AM so I may have to move them the night before. Hopefully it won't hurt the hatch.

It has been a great weekend, I am going to enjoy the drive to KS tomorrow.

and the rest are due to hatch tonight or tomorrow.

There are more due to hatch next week and also the hen went broody last week and is sitting on 7 eggs. What am I going to do with more LF Cochins? Plus, I just got a Bantam Americana pair from Teach and some eggs from Michael R.. I also am getting a La Fleche trio from a friend in Texas.Where did all these chickens come from? - I know, I know, I am preaching to the choir.
you and i have the same issues...only its ee's that are the dilemma, i have gotte so i will pull all the eggs but one or two, but still.... i have 5 broodies, i figure i'll sell most the chicks at the june meet, but any that are going broody now i am just pulling the eggs, i can't afford to feed the extras- and now dragon the nn has decided its her turn...should hear me lecturing her!

meanwhile...what you don't want to deal with when watering birds...

she is pretty intimidating when she is a mama.... usually these guineas come up and tell me all about the day.... be glad when the little ones are big enuf to let out with her- and the rest the flock is hanging on the porch waiting for her

I'm so sorry about your luck hopefully you chickiees get better. Maybee instead of building a chicken coop you could buil a Dane coop. Lol I hope u find your turtle

So sorry that sounds like a horrible day.

Thanks ladies

Elie - I'm planning on relocating the dane. I was planning on nursing him back to health and relocating him to begin with when we got him back in march, then one of my dogs died in april so we decided to keep him, but looks like we're back to the original plan with him.

The girl that is now laying was broody in April. I put eggs from my Mottled pair under her but let her keep one Buff egg. We didn't plan to hatch any buffs this year but I thought "just 1 and hopefully it will be a pullet" -

Buff chicks are such a pretty color. The father of your trio is named Moonpie. So my DH is calling the new chick MP3 and turns out she is a she!!!!!

Since I am a novice at incubation I have been taking my LF Buff hen's eggs to Jack to put in his incubator. Last week the first 3 were clear but this week only 1 was clear and the rest are due to hatch tonight or tomorrow.

My daughters birthday is wednesday and she finally told me what she wants. She wants two baby duckies . Sooo any one have any duckies for sale?
I have 1 male (?) that I am looking to rehome. I go it as a duckling on easter weekend. It's partner passed last weekend so we have decided to find it another home instead of getting it another mate. these ducks grow a lot faster than chickens.

Agh. I had a great day until I finally got home this evening to find my tortoise had escaped his box and is no where to be found, the dane pulled a bunch of the tail feathers off of one of the turkeys, and the stupid cornish that I put in with the younger chickens tried to make a dinner out of my sick EE. He got stuck between the two barn doors last night and I found him this morning stuck on his back between them, so I thought I'd get DH to keep an eye on him to make sure he was okay, instead he left tons of bloody spots on the EE and a couple on one of the orps. So now I need to rehome the dane, nurse the poor EE and orp back to health, and hope and pray my tortoise reappears. I've had him for almost 10 years

Oh shoot-Cathie, I meant to tell you I LOVE this hoop house!!! Do you use hog panels? I've got to figure out a way to make something like that!

Nanakat these are the the eggs I got at poops and they are already a day late and not one has hatched 20 out of 24 black coppers have hatched in the same incubator. I do not have a way to candle
A good LED flashlight in a dark room will give you an idea if the chick is moving. You may have to cut a hole in a piece of cardboard to narrow the light. Since this is the due date..you look to the big end to see if a beak is moving in the air space... You should also hear chickie noises.
I was hoping you would get at least a couple of eggs to hatch for a few of the CW to add to your flock.

Cathy we lockdown eggs the night prior all the time, the eggs never get mad.
I spent the entire day sorting 4 pens of guineas. Catching them & figuring out where I wanted them.

From our poops eggs we still have the 1 lone serama, so I put her under the silkie hen & the silkie was very happy once she stopped growling. Her other chicks are due to hatch in a couple days & she doesn't seem to be leaving the eggs. The BCM eggs we won @ the raffle, only 1 viable egg hasn't hatched & we have had 3 buff Cochins & 2 Dominic hatch.
Also had 19 turkeys hatch today & 4 more eggs still working on getting out. The guineas mostly hatched 2 days early this wk, but one did hatch today. I am giving the eggs one more day to see if anymore hatch.

Oh & I picked a 5 lb zucchini today. Somehow it must have gotten over looked a few times when we picked that row. Tomorrow is barn cleaning day. Some how everything without a home ends up inside the barn door. It is a HUGE mess! Maybe if I am lucky DH will help mount the fan in the barn wall & we can get the birds new swamp cooler hooked up tomorrow too.
