***OKIES in the BYC III ***

hey guys, am trying to figure out my new phone, what version of taptalk do you use for byc??

now i'll go back and try to catchup...6 pages!! my goodness - a chatty bunch today!

so how do I tame this guy down? Way too pretty to give up.
Treats.. in the pen for a day or two, they associate you with the treat, then by hand.. They will mellow and be fine, young agressive breeders are often very protective of thier hens..

MJ, the NN gene is dominant and the feather legs seems to be also. So you'd at least get *some NN feather legs in the hatch lol!

3 of the four boys in that hatch were nn with feathered feet- it can be done...:)

edited to add: papa is a cochin....

I have 23 Roos and 5 of them came from people that had to get rid of them because of aggression I tamed them down by holding them A LOT I will carry them around as I do chores outside I just hold them and talk to them and give them treats and take a lawn chair and just sit in their coop. Pretty soon your just another one of the flock and not a strange intruder. This may not work for everyone but works for me hope it helps.

went to change the water and he came at me, feathers ruffled. He met a gallon of water and was not happy. Gonna break him of this!

I know I warned you and you knew what you were getting into, but I still feel bad. He's such a beautiful rooster. I really believe (given the fact he's only a year old) that he's just got more testosterone than manners right now. Treats would be what I would use also. Make him associate everything good with you. I know some people beat the tar out of them and kick them and all that....but sheesh-they're birds and we're humans. We can outsmart them.

I have had luck with letting them have it with the water hose when they charge it cools them down and they forget about fighting, My experience beating the bird only plays into his want to fight he doesnt really care if he looses he will come right back for more when he can "only thing roosters love more than breeding is fighting"

As long as they think you are a challenge to them they will fight , I think the idea of trying to hold them and get them use to you is pretty good if you have the time.

Morning Okies! It's only 79 degrees out there, but it feels line 90. This week is going to be miserably hot. I've got frozen water bottles to put in each pen. New shade cloth is helping some, but when the wind doesn't blow, the heat presses down on my flock like a heavy hand. I'm watering the dirt in shady spots to give the bids some relief. Watermelon each day, too, seems to help. Plan for the day? Stay in the shade. Wear a hat. Do all the heavy lifting before the sun comes up or after the sun goes down.

I'm moving the brooder babies to the kiddie pool on the side porch. No need for a heat lamp : ) Maybe next week the babies will be fully feathered and ready for pasture. Have a great day, everyone.
