***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Oh, that is a pretty, pretty bird.
I really do like the Rosecombs.. I have a few cockrells and a pullet or two that the spike got damaged or comb is a bit too beefy if you would like some with minor faults, they will be very cheap, just to get them out of my feed bin, or I have some good ones all intact.

Taking time to catch up....ya'll have been busy!! Unloaded the wood shavings and will spread them when it is cooler. Also bought two more 11 pound feeders to hang.
Quote: I bet most of the paterns came from the Kansas City Star...it used to post sewing patterns as well as crochet and tatting and quilt blocks. I learned to tat years ago using my gggm's tatting shuttles. I have several good oldie pattern books that were my grandmothers.

Quote: Sure, go ahead. I have several more that I really like too if you want me to pm them to you. I just didn't want to be too sunflower heavy.... I got a really good one of the farm and barn in the background.

Quote: It is. There is another sunflower patch down Pott County line to the south of hwy 62 intersection. The flowers are already turning a little crispy.
My columbian pullets are starting mature some more which finally cleans up the back and completes the lacing in the tail coverts. I am very pleased with the earlier pullets so hoping for more like this one or a bit better in the others coming up. This is one of my favorites from the earlier matings.
She is gorgeous! love the white edging on the tail feathers. You know me and CW!
Quote: My little black Rosecomb cockerel is getting his pretty tail feathers now...not quite as long as Patterson's bird that Carl posted as an example but I'm proud of him.

Just give hime some time.. they are from the same line just take time to finish out, he is still young.

I have a question about DE. I put some DE in with some freshly chopped squash and fed it to the chickies 2 days ago for a suspected worm problem. I also dusted all the birds as they ate the squash. No eggs yesterday, but today I had a lot of eggs. The eggs were a lot bigger than they have been in a few months and all my blue eggs that had faded to a very light color are all a really pretty blue now. Should I give them more DE? I have read several threads on here and tried to figure this out, but some people say they give it daily and other say once a week to once a month. Just wondering what you guys here thought.

Thanks,
Lori

HELP! How do you clip the beak of a crossed beak? I have asked a few people but I scared I'm gonna hurt them. I have two they are so sweet and I want to give them the best life I can so and suggestions ? Thanx

Think I need to have a firm talk with my laying hens. Have 2 more girls trying to go broody. Plus my silkie hen, that won't give up her chicks & steals others laid an egg today! Think she needs to be relocated back to her old coop, but I know we are up for a challenge to get those 6wk old chicks away from her. she is a fiesty momma!
Tomorrow I plan on getting some more oats soaking with added electrolytes since tripple digits are showing for the rest of the wk. My hens almost empties their water completely today while we were in town. Usually there water will last 2 days.
DD had her tooth x-rayed then they pulled it. Dentist said it cracked when she bit down hard on something due to the baby tooth impacting the new tooth. She feels much better but is still fussing a tad. We still see the same pediatric dentist the girls started seeing 10 yrs ago. They did a complete remodel of the waiting room & now it is outfitted with video games & the works. It was always very child friendly & inviting. I don't understand why video games are needed @ the dentist??
This evening I worked on cutting up about 40lbs of peaches some are in the dehydrator the rest are in the freezer. The smell of peaches dehydrating smells just like peach cobbler. Oh how yummy!
Dinner tonight is fend for yourself, Taron said she was cutting open a black diamond melon to eat. The poor girl eats watermelon 3 times a day since they started coming ripe. The squash bugs are starting to get my melons, so we may be done with melons here real soon.

Hi and welcome to the Okies thread my birds are taking the heat pretty good no losses yet. Fingers crossed hopefully none to come. I have a fan on mine plenty of shade and fresh cold water. What kinda chicken do you have?

I have one 6 week old BO, two 8 week old RIRs, and a blind 4 month old RIR who I don't think is going to make it in this heat. It sucks, because she is really sweet. I plan on getting an EE and a silkie as soon as I get my big coop built, and I start that project this weekend. I'm building it out of scrap shipping crates and pallets, but I'm completely dismantling them and salvaging the good lumber. So far for the project I have salvaged 12 12' 4x4s and 3 12' 2x4s. Lots of 4x8 3/8 sheets of plywood. My company just has this stuff crushed up, so I get it free.
