***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I lost my second chicken to the heat today. My favorite lavender Ameracuana. She has always been a bit on the hefty side. Wonder if this played a part with the heat in her death?

Sorry about your loss, I have lost two chicks in two days, yesterday I lost one of the young aracuana to a feral cat, and today one of my NN chicks the broody is raising just disappeared, have no clue, but KNOW it wasn't the cat, there is no way a cat could have got past skyfire, oreo, and the hoarde of NN boys.

Got this girl today from a friend of my wife's. She has a small tractor in town and said she needed to get rid of this bird. Since I lost one of mine I gladly accepted. Is this a white ameraucana? It has that beard and greenish colored legs. It seems a bit on the smaller side from my other birds of the same age so maybe a bantam??

HELP! How do you clip the beak of a crossed beak? I have asked a few people but I scared I'm gonna hurt them. I have two they are so sweet and I want to give them the best life I can so and suggestions ? Thanx
here is a good thread on cross beaks-

sometimes its better to file than clip, less risk of cutting too short

SDS- i am thinking EE, they are pretty common in hatchery stock, but wonderful birds!

That is a beautiful bird! True Ameraucana have what they call "slate" legs, which is a fancy name for gray. I've got 2 white Bantam Ameraucana that are about a month old now and their legs were gray at birth. Some of the Ameraucana people can be pretty uppity and unless you know the exact background of a particular bird they'll want to call it an EE. The differences can be confusing at times. I've got some hatching right now also, a Lavender and a Black just hatched and 3 others are pipped. I'm sure hoping for the Silver to hatch!

kass, had that happen too, i am thinking a snake maybe??
I caught my 1st snake tonight when I was tucking in the birds. I've got these way-too-expensive snake tongs that I carry around with me every night when I'm tucking birds in. Wouldn't you know I'd set them down when I saw the snake. Sigh. I actually had ahold of him and was waiting for my husband to lop it's head off because I couldn't work the loppers with 1 hand. I held him down with a board and was trying to get a better grip on him with the tongs and the slippery dang thing got away! He was only about 2 ft long but still! I was so mad at myself.
Robin, you can tell if a snake has had ahold of them because their head and neck will be all slimy and elongated from him trying to swallow them. The only consolation is they do kill them fast 1st before they try swallowing. So at least the babies don't have to suffer for a long time.
