***OKIES in the BYC III ***

of course the well guy came by, and the well is working just fine. go figure! luckily he lives just right down the road.
here's my one lone chick. we're waiting on more to hatch but so far nothing. we're naming him/her Bear.Hope that works on the well for a while.
So sorry to see all the fire damages being reported...
Have a lone baby chick in a small hatch. Had 4 eggs in lockdown, two hatched one I had to assist. one dis. The one that was assisted died on day 2 and now last night lost one of the healthy babies. Cleaned the brood box in the house and have the baby set up with a mirror and a cloth buddy for now. Either need a couple of chicks to go with it or need to find a hen to raise it.. It's one of the F1 crossed back to the CW rooster so it would be nice to get it up to see what it will look like. It may end up being a very spoiled chick if I raise it in the house for a couple of weeks.
Any body have any week old chicks out there I can purchase or to spare for a while?

Silly question, My chick made a noise lat night, that I have never heard... Its a chirp, but it sound almost like if we were to roll an "R" sound with our tongue, kind of like in an hispanic accent? it was high pitched chirpy like, sorry I couldnt explain it better than that! If anyone knows what Im talking about, Id great apreciate your input!

Changing out the pump is definatly what caused the dirty water. Can't believe your well guy didn't tell you to expect it. Think ours was dirty for 5 or 6 hours after we changed the pump.
Having a lone chick is always so sad. They really do need a companion. Having 3 broody hens in 1 pen has worked out great. Between the 3 of them the last batches of keets have been completely taken care of. Some of them were even 2 wks old when I gave them to the hens. We only lost 2 keets, I imagine they were smashed or something of that nature.
Our egg production has been climbing this wk. personally think it is odd, but last yr when we gave them oats soaked in electrolyte enhanced water I remember it helping. That & watermelon is what our hens are living off of.
Smelled like rain about 630 but I never saw any.
DH went to the NAF sale (army leftovers). I am sure I would have found more things I needed all he bought was 14 saw horses for $3 each. Plan to use them for outdoor tables to sort produce on & will also use them to make tables to hold my seedlings. DD loves them because she will set a saw horse in the grow out pens & it is an instant chicken roost!
We picked a yellow doll Mellon that was so ripe it busted open as DD sat it on the tailgate. Made for a yummy breakfast. Thinking after nxt wk we will be struggling to have much of a harvest. The heat has kept most new fruit from forming & the squash bugs are even getting the cucumbers & melons. We are going to plant some more cucumbers & squash on the other side of our property, but I am not real hopeful for them.
Looking forward to the cooler temps they are predicting for next wk. As of right now I plan on spending Monday at the water park, that is always subject to change based on kids attitudes!

I googled this thing you all are calling ' R-A-I-N' but from the definition of it I don't geuss we any around here.
We've replaced quite a few well pumps the past 20 yrs, the last one was 7 yrs ago and was a rebuilt $35 one-the only onewe could find at 10:00 on a SUnday night. The thing has lasted through thousands of water changes in my fish tanks plus everything else. I'd sure like to have more water pressure though-does a high hp pump give better water pressure?
Nana, I've got a lone 3 day old chick also. She's a keeper since she's out of the Brown Red Cochin pair before OKRacefan took him. I can't get her to eat! It seems they don't figure it out very well when they're alone. I tried putting different week old Orloff chicks with her but they screamed their heads off. He/she's so quite by herself. She thinks I'm her mama. I've GOT to get her to eat today. I've only seen her pick at it a few times. She was out of a pullet egg and is so tiny, like a Bantam Cochin but she's an LF. Both her parents are pretty big so I hope she catches up.
That's what I wrote earlier this morning but it wouldn't post for me. It just hung up and wouldn't do anything. I wonder what the deal is with BYC. I'm wishing now they hadn't changed it.
Anyway-I sat down again with the baby Cochin determined to get her to eat something since this is Day 3. Yolk sacs only last so long, ya know. I made stupid noises and tapped the food until I finally hit on the perfect stupid noise that made her dive into her wet mash
. I think it's just a matter of making a fool of yourself long enough before they'll eat. I'll have to keep getting her out today and re-doing it until her crop is properly stuffed like a good little Cochin baby.

Mitzi we put in the largest pump we could buy for our well. It does 25 gal per min & we put a 90 gal pressure tank. They didn't want to sell us something that big, but I was willing to gamble on it. Immediately blew holes in all our old water hoses since the pressure is so high right at the pump. I love it! However we have a really good water table. Most people would have ran their well dry pumping as much as we do. Think most wells start with 9gal per min pumps. That & the small pressure tank is why pressure is lacking. Or at least why ours was. Think it cost us about $1500 with DH doing all the work to completely refit our well - not counting our softner & sand filter system. Was worth every penny!
Jim we will have to talk egg prices. We haven't raised ours yet. Noticed a lady was selling for $3.30 a dz & no one seemed to mind, and honestly we are still paying sales tax on what we sell. I am ready to raise the price of our eggs. I was think $3.50 then maybe go to $4 in spring. I didn't want it to be too much of a price shock. I was struggling on pricing the few melons I am bringing tomorrow. I dont want to under cut anyone, so priced them between $5-$8. Everyone is taking melons home each wk since they have them priced at $10 IMO.

If you did not run it constantly for 24 hrs you probably need to do so. Just run it out of the garden hose or outdoor faucet. Those water well service guys charge a lot for a little work that they do.
My Brother (Nocityboy) and I have set our own water pumps and ran the water lines ourselves so all we had was the cost of drilling, pump, water lines and parts.
I also suggest dumping a gallon of bleach down the well before do the 24 hour run. It will clean out the bacteria that might have built up over the years.
