***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hubby's job interview went well but he won't know about that job until early next week ... in the meantime he starts a new job on Monday morning in town, so no more driving. Yeah!! The heat is killing me but so far the birds are all being smart and hanging out in the a/c in the coop. Our oldest turkey refuses to even come outside. Smart old bird. Used vanilla extract in there and it reduced the fly population by hundreds.

Need to get some girlie bantams to add my flock ... my little cochin boy has started to behave better and we think if he had a girl or two it would make him behave even better. Plus our golden sebright needs a girl too. I don't want to add any until the heat subsides some though, I think. I just can't spend time out there in these temps and I would worry about how they were all getting along otherwise. So I guess we'll try to wait until September and see what's around and hope that it cools down by then.

Well in two weeks I officially start to work in Enid. Really nice guys run the company too, I could tell that the heat had them worn down but it didn't affect their personality.

Will be back to working on semis and heavy equipment which I really love to do. I will have to get up to speed on the electronics of the trucks but that shouldn't take long to do.

We have found a house that we would like to rent too after getting shot down on the first one we found. As much trouble as it has been to find the owner I sure hope we are rewarded at the end.
Great news on the job and hope the owner grants you and Teva a lease!
Hey all i purchased one of these for my chickens and boy are they greatful for it! They were all huddled around it yesterday when i got home. In this heat i have not lost any to me that is worth the 10 bucks. Just thought i would share

Atwoods carries them too. Birds love them.

Elwood, I stole your Africa-hot-Oklahoma-hot comment for my Facebook page. Funny stuff. Hope you don't mind. My kinfolk in Africa thought it was hilarious.

Les, congrats on the new job. Always exciting to start anew.

My funny for the day from a friend's Facebook page...

Speaking of job interviews...

Today I was interviewing this young college fella for a position at the library. While talking about his library experience, he mentioned he helped a lot of old people on the computer because they don't understand computers like young people do. I said, "Yeah, those old people and their computers are a pain." He nodded in agreement.

Funny thing is, I'm the IT guy at my library. I'll be 60 this year. Never ceases to amaze me the stupid things people say in job interviews.

He didn't get the job.

Thanks, Nana. :)

On the $1 birds I have been obsessing about the last couple of days...

The company is Fisher's in Bristow. Here is their website:

http://fisherag.com/index.htm

I watched a video of the birds and it looks more like the beaks are merely trimmed rather than clipped. Here is what clipped looks like (NOT from their farm):

And here is a picture from the video showing the some of the Fisher birds:

So when I think of the top pic, I feel this bird is severely handicapped for pasture operations. The birds below from Fisher Farm, I could see them pulling at grass or pecking bugs just fine.

Just wanted to clarify as I'm always concerned about giving out bad information.

This heat is just too much! Everyday when I get home I am so afraid of finding all of my chickens dead. I hope not. I have done everything I can do. I have a mister fan in one area along with a canopy under a tree and a mister with a fan behind it on another pen. So far so good, but I worry about them catching a respiratory infection with the mist and water. Kind of like ****** if you do/don't.

Sorry to hear of the losses some of you have had. I am seriously thinking about caging them and bringing them in. At least some mating pairs. That way, if I lose them, at least I will have some pairs/trios left. I pray for rain and cooler temps!

Well I think I just got some really bad news!

I think we have to have a new well drilled!! Our water is MUDDY. As far as I know, this well hasn't been used since the 80's, it's been fine since we moved in in April, but just tonight, the water looks like mud. That can't be good. Anyone with wells have any advice?

I'll apparently be up for awhile now. So irritating!

I am no expert-- but first thing I would ask is what kinda filter are you using & how deep is your well. Sounds like you are sucking mud from the bottom--- but at least you are still getting water. My first guess is the water level is low (sure you guessed that yourself).
Might want to ask around & see how deep ur neighbors wells are. Also you could switch to a smaller pump so you are not moving as much water as fast. Or put a dole valve on your existing setup so it moves less water. This is assuming your have a bigger pump than needed. If you are already on a pump that is low capacity then that wouldn't work.
We redid our whole well set up in Jan. was a fun memorable experience. But now I have all the water pressure a girl could ever ask for! Amazing to be able to wash dishes & water the garden at the same time!
