***OKIES in the BYC III ***

i guess what i was wondering, how would that help them in the heat??

did bring my black star in tonite, she has one eye that she can't open- so i sprayed it with vetrycine, and see how in looks in the morning... could that be heat related or just dust or injury?
I don't think it has any affect on heat at all, I just learned about it from one of his posts a week or two ago. It made sense and didn't seem like it would hurt them, they probably could use the animal fat anyway.

Les - Congrats on the job!

Bill - Commiserations on the stones. Our youngest daughter struggles with them each year. Doctors can't tell her why they keep forming. She's had sonic treatments to pulverize them, and some have required surgical removal.

Robin - Hope the black star is doing better. Let us know if the vetrycine helps her.

The pair I have on are the type that the hinges have the springs in them but even they don't fare well when slept in. I used superglue to fix the broken ear piece and it is holding very well. I had to re-do it the other morning because again I fell asleep with them on. First fix was six months ago. And these are the full metal frames.
Well Jennifer had full metal frames once and she bent them all to pieces before her next pair. Those were the plastic type with the spring hinges. Those lasted until this week when they "fell off her face and she stepped on them". The two pair I got her in Oct were both the plastic with spring hinges. They were great but not ment to be left in your bedroom floor when you go to bed, then someone steps on them when they go to get you up. She got hard cases for both pair so I don't get why they weren't in a case or at the very least on her nightstand but then again I don't think like a kid, lol.

Lard b/c Al was swearing by it's helping keep the skin and feathers in top shape, and ease of storage, the store rendered lard doesn't go bad.
When we were showing chickens years ago, i would put corn oil in a spray bottle and spray the scratch grains I fed in the evening to the birds, if mixing in say a five gallon bucket you could just pour it on liberally and stir the grain till all is covered, another thing I did back then was to cook rice and add Red Cell(vitamins for Horses) and frozen or canned mixed veggies to the rice and give it once a day at about a tablespoon per bird. It is a lot of work but your birds will love you for it!!! Lynn

well, Traveller the black star has that eye half open, she is peering around like she can't see out of it, so she is in a cage on the porch and will see how she does, i am thinking she injured it.

out to try to get some stuff done before the hideous heat kicks in

Knowing Al he is probably trying to pre-season the birds, kinda like a Butterball Turkey!

Morning all, Les congrats on the job and luck on the house, Kass i used to make suit cakes for wild birds in the winter with lard and peanut butter and grain, I am sure it works the same as giving our birds the lard or oil, it helps their feathers and skins, could you PM me the other site Al is on, I miss visiting with him on here, we had three more dead baby chicks this morning(of course they were my Red Quill and Punkins!!!) I am sick of this heat but there seems to be no end in sight, I hate loosing my birds but we are doing all we can, PRAYING fro RAIN!!!! Lynn

Robin, she suggested lard for feather quality because we were talking about their feathers looking tattered because of the sun. I like Greybear's idea a lot better though! Somehow giving mammal lard to poultry doesn't sound right. People give them yogurt all the time also and birds are lactose intolerant so that doesn't make sense to me either.

Les, congrats! It sounds like you and Teva deserve to get all the things you want. My husband is a heavy equipment mechanic also. He doesn't care much for being under a truck on an asphalt parking lot in 117 degrees though.
