***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My pullets are finally laying. I haven't been keeping them locked up, but now that i'm finding eggs all over everywhere, as soon as my broody hatches her eggs out this weekend, I'm gonna lock the girls up for awhile until they learn to lay in the coop.

for those of you that don't know my husband is a DJ. So in one of our sheds we have about 20+ crates of records in there. One of my girls has decided her favorite place to lay is on 1 of the crates of records. I've now found 2 eggs in there on top of the same crate. Silly girl! I've found 1 in the other shed (guess we left that door open one morning.) They seem to be favoring the darker more enclosed areas.

Well the rain is pouring here at the office in Shawnee. Hope my birds put those little bird brains to good use and get into their coops without me there to make sure they do. They aren't the smartest at times. I have one entire pen that will sit in the rain on the outside roosts instead of getting in out of the weather, dingy birds! I bought tarps today at lunch to cover their run with but I am going to be a bit behind the ball on that one since I won't get home until almost 7 tonight. Looks like I will be getting wet with them then, lol.

Just dropping in to say - I have chickens again! In the nine months since our move to Duncan, I have been completely pet-less. But I got four laying hens from a coworker, and so I now have 3 Barred Rocks and 1 Rhode Island Red hen =)
Good for you...I just knew you couldn't stay birdless for long!

I purposefully didn't let my chooks out to free-range this morning when I left to babysit my grandson. I just knew if it started raining while I was gone, that the girls wouldn't go back to the coops. They like to hang out under the farm equipment and trucks. Didn't want to go crawling under the equipment looking for today's eggs.

I'm expecting eggs to hatch this weekend too, well Sun/Mon.

Quote: Mine should be tomorrow or saturday. They're shipped eggs, I hope I get 1 or 2. This is my first time with a broody hen. Should I take the babies out after they hatch? Will they fall out of the coop (it's raised off the ground)? Does momma protect from the other chickens? I have no idea what to do, I feel so helpless! I did just set 22 swedish flower hen eggs in my NEW bator! So excited! I have 20 more eggs coming, they were supposed to be here yesterday, but USPS hasn't delivered them yet and they also have not updated the status of the shipment since tuesday. I'm getting a bit aggravated!

Hello Lynn...glad to heat you are okay.
Cjarvis, How have you done at showing?

Love those broodie hens. Will be out of town for week and delilah is sitting on eggs due to hatch that week. Two more girls are trying to go broodie now. May let one set an other batch of eggs...but will have to house them in a pen together. Hmmmmmm. Need to reorganize the pens so that can happen. Banties here, grow out pen out there and then layers there and there.

Kimbroe, I'm not a broody expert, I have only had the one broody and she did protect her chicks from the others, but they weren't aggressive at all towards them. Oreo my roo also actively "gaurded" both the broody mom and the chicks. Skyfire my broody wasn't one of Oreo's favs and he seldom was around her before the chicks or since then, but while she had chicks he was always by her side. The chick(s) and mom won't budge for a day or so after hatch, but after that we made sure there was a ramp for them and they did fine.
