***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Nana, I love Delilah. I've got 2 Cochin girls in that same position here. I've got them on eggs but it's only been a couple days, I'm wondering if I should just just take those and stick the Phoenix that are fixing to hatch under them instead. Still deciding.

I had to make a sling for my Cochin boy So when I got him slung up and put his food in front of him he had a little feast. I'm figuring out if there's an easier way to do this but for now at least he's upright and supported.
Love the sling...just make sure there is a good sized hole on the back side for those little deposits....

On the hens...do you have two broodie pens? If so, give the Phoenix eggs to one hen and candle your eggs. Let the other hatch the fertile eggs. Two happy moms and you get lots of chicks...
I think the dark NN will make it, but he is very vocal today, don't know what that is about, but he is walking I was up w/ them all night hand feeding or watering every couple of hours.

but the little houdan isn't going to make it I don't know what happened, she had a perfect hatch, and for parts of two days after was running all over the bator, then the night before I was going to move them to the brooder started seeing balance problems just slight at first, then by that next morning they were dramatic balance problems, but still able to stand and move, but would fall and not be able to get back up, then progressing to not able to stand at all. She ate actively and drank, perfectly formed poop, had bright eyes highly interactive???????
Sometimes they just don't make it...it is so hard to lose one that you really wanted to hatch.

Yeah on the NN!!

Don't know what to say on the houdan. I don't have enough experience with hatching birds out to know. I've had several eggs that were viable and growing and had perfectly formed babies in them and were still moving, etc until the day of hatch ... and then they never hatched. It's puzzling (and heartbreaking) to not know what happened or why. Plus we raise turkeys and they are, if not anything else, hard to raise as babies. They can be great one minute and dead 3 hours later. I'd say with balance problems she probably has something neurological wrong with her, but that's just a guess.
I agree I believe it is neuro too. On the houdan thread AE was brought up which has me concerned, up until I read that I was pretty sure it was congenital so my other 3 were safe, but AE is contagious so I guess time will tell, if the others start getting syptomatic I'll figure it was AE and if not congenital.

Oh Mitzi, sorry you lost one of your boys! I love the sling set up!!!

Kass, I am glad one of the little chicks are doing better! We have 2 little chicks that Nathanael bought at Poops and they have always seemed weak, well there were 3. We lost one this summer and we may loose another 2. Both are weak and while they eat and drink just fine, they are not steady on their feet and so I pray if they are going to pass away they do it quickly. I may have to have dh put them down and tell Nathanael they didn't make it. I was really hoping the two eggs he had in the hatcher would hatch this week and he would have them to play with to get over loosing the other two but sadly yesterday was hatch day and nothing.

I think it is the time of year. I honestly don't think chicks hatched this time of year are as strong as chicks hatched in the spring. At least that has been our experience so far. Jackson has a little pair of banty cochins we have had almost 100% hatch rate out of this year and this last hatch only 5 of the 12 eggs moved to the hatcher and only 2 of those 5 have hatched.

Nanakat, how are you doing? Hope your arm is feeling better.

Christina, how are you? I really miss getting on the byc and reading every day but I have been swamped the last few days. Plus I have a new phone and can't get online as much until I figure out how to use the darn thing, lol.

Hey Cathie! I had to get a new phone yesterday too! But mine was still under warranty so just had to go to apple & wait my turn. With in an hour had a new phone. So we went to the fair since had to be in OKC anyways. Paying for my past 2 days of being too busy, hurting pretty bad today.

Kass in my experience the chicks that are weak never are the same as the healthy ones. They seem to be smaller & have more issues. I know it's harder when it's your first hatch.

Mitzi I agree the boy was a good age to under go the procedure, kinda crazy they couldn't stop the bleeding when they have lots of tools at their disposal.

I have been tablet shopping this past month, makes my head hurt! Everytime I decide this is what I want I consider a different one! On the plus side 2 yrs ago I bought a high end executive chair from staples & purchased the $25 protection plan. The leather has gotten a few nics in it so they are sending me a staples gift card for the purchase price of the chair. So it will go towards my tablet-- when I decide what to purchase.

Almost got sick buying fencing today. But, I'm very excited that I have all my materials for a privacy fence for my house. $900!!! This is my first time buying a home and it has been a whirlwind of dollar signs. But my dog and flock will be safer.

Some new pics of the chicks

The little araucana, hopefully girl. She is rumpless, not sure yet if she is tufted. She stands toe to toe w/ the larger NN hatchmates

The darker NN, his name is Jaxom (any McCaffrey fans?) b/c he needed help hatching and the first day of life.

The lighter NN, hopefully a girl. This pic says it all about her, she came to rule the world. Seriously
