***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Treating a chicken for a gunshot wound to the wing. Someone was hunting on our land, and had "accidentally" shot one of my chickens. Got a good size of the meat, and most of his primary feathers. And very scared to death of humans now. Not fun. Wish me luck.

I started w/ the fodder too this week, I am hoping it will be as easy as the sprouting I did all last winter, but so far it isn't.

I will continue to try and tweek the process to see if I can make it effortless, but may well just go back to the burlap bag sprouts intsead of fodder.
what kinds of fodder seed are you trying? I am liking wheat and barley. We just added oats this week I usually ferment those but we will try growing them. I soak overnight in a bucket and then rinse twice the next day. Then spread out on the upside down shelves. The birds now act as if I am trying to poison them if I offer anything but fodder and fermented grains.
This is day 1 after soaking in plain water for 24 hours

This is day 3-4
This is day 6-7 it will get taller if you wait until day 8 but I don't have enough shelves to do an 8 day cycle.

Mitzi we had over a dozen birds come down with something this wk & I promise they haven't been exposed to anything (except what nature brings) since early summer. We lost 2 - I have had several get better but most are still looking ill. I wanted them all better before my surgery but for some reason the chickens don't listen to what I want.
Cathie the gentleman that had 70+ Muscovies we helped collect said he hadn't mowed his acre since he got the ducks & he only feeds them a 64oz cup of corn in the AM & PM. That corn was nothing more than a treat -- they were foraging for all their nutrition & fat healthy ducks.
This is good to know Christina because my roo pens are getting mostly fodder only getting pellets once a week. Now my layers all have free choice of pellets but the dog feeder in one of the pens has been pretty much full since we started offering fodder. I lost two little guineas they were both 3 months old and the only two in their pen both died over the weekend no signs of illness. I am guessing it has been the weather changes that got them. They passed within 12 hours of each other. I decided no more late hatches of guineas. Of course out latest hatch wasn't my idea the guinea hens had other ideas lol.

oh, dear that is awful hope she get better good luck

Christina and Cathie, sounds like I'm not the only one dealing with bird health problems. The ones I've lost and the ones sick have all been from this years hatches with the exception of 1. I've not had great luck with my Silver Laced Cochins at all. 4 Silver Laces hatched last spring, 1 died at 5 wks, 1 developed the tendon problem and surgery didn't work so he had to be put down and now the remaining 2 are the ones with some sort of respiratory crap. The other Cochins & 2 Orps raised with them are seemingly unaffected. It makes me wonder if Silver Laced is a weaker color or something.
And then to top it all off.....I got 1 male and 4 female Spitzhaubens awhile back and today one of the girls turned into a boy and crowed! Just overnight she turned. I don't know if I can take this after my precious little Brown Red Cochin pullet turning into a cockerel last week

Jeez, I've had WAY too many boys this year. Then the little Cochin with the stolen egg babies has 4 girls and 5 boys-arg!
Oh yea-and my Red Cochin bantam went missing out of the blue last week. We got smart this time and (literally) jacked the 10x14 shed up with a huge jack and got under there and there she was-sitting on about 40 eggs she'd stolen and hauled under there. My big black Cochin girl is living in the bathroom for a few days. She's done nothing but sit and I checked her over the other day and she had a huge thick scab on her chest I pulled off. Like a callous from all the sitting she's done. What IS it with these girls???

I need stuff that thrives on neglect and inattention!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your fodder is amazing, but I don't have the time, space or inclination to haul out a tray every day and spray it a few times and haul it back inside. My fodder is wheat and oat (the two grains I have the easiest access to) the wheat is barely sprouting after 5 days and the oat isn't even thinking about it!!!! In the burlap sacs that I did all last year for sprouts by day 4 the oats were growing out of the bags (by day 3 even) but to do that method I would have to feed sprouts and not fodder, I am going to rethink and maybe figure out a way to tweek this, but may well end up going back to my bulap sprouting that thrives on neglect. lol

I missed this post earlier-oh no! How on earth does someone mistake a chicken for some sort of game to be killed??

I'm wondering if there was a wabbit and duck with an attitude involved..

Seriously though that sucks that someone would do that, I get nervous walking my own property this time of year I don't allow anyone to hunt on my place but I've seen spent casings that aren't all that old towards the back side of the woods..
