***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I honestly don't know. It's a barred rock rooster, do its a little dark in color, somewhat hard to see from a distance. I heard the poor thing hollering from far away. It took me about an hour trying to hussle him back to the coop for the night. He was so scared he didn't know where to go. It breaks my heart to see his wing like that. I am keeping vetrycin on it for now, can't really wrap it because its at an odd angle. He still flaps it, but you can tell he hurts when you try to stretch it out to get a good look at it. I just hope he doesn't get an infection of some sort.

i am thinking you need to put him on an oral antibiotic to be safe - of course keep him in a crate covered to keep him quiet- don't know that wrapping it would work as it would just be that much more stressful? i wonder if neosporin might be better since it will kill some of the pain, not sure if vetrycin will do that

Christina and Cathie, sounds like I'm not the only one dealing with bird health problems. The ones I've lost and the ones sick have all been from this years hatches with the exception of 1. I've not had great luck with my Silver Laced Cochins at all. 4 Silver Laces hatched last spring, 1 died at 5 wks, 1 developed the tendon problem and surgery didn't work so he had to be put down and now the remaining 2 are the ones with some sort of respiratory crap. The other Cochins & 2 Orps raised with them are seemingly unaffected. It makes me wonder if Silver Laced is a weaker color or something.
And then to top it all off.....I got 1 male and 4 female Spitzhaubens awhile back and today one of the girls turned into a boy and crowed! Just overnight she turned. I don't know if I can take this after my precious little Brown Red Cochin pullet turning into a cockerel last week

Jeez, I've had WAY too many boys this year. Then the little Cochin with the stolen egg babies has 4 girls and 5 boys-arg!
Oh yea-and my Red Cochin bantam went missing out of the blue last week. We got smart this time and (literally) jacked the 10x14 shed up with a huge jack and got under there and there she was-sitting on about 40 eggs she'd stolen and hauled under there. My big black Cochin girl is living in the bathroom for a few days. She's done nothing but sit and I checked her over the other day and she had a huge thick scab on her chest I pulled off. Like a callous from all the sitting she's done. What IS it with these girls???

My silver Laced Roo has been my sickliest bird. I am wondering if the dust from the dirt road gets to him sometimes.

I have lost 4 young birds this week from this year's hatch. Two were d'Anvers and two were about six weeks old.
And I've treated the coop for mites since they have been found on 4 adults. I checked those lost birds...no mites. All birds have been ivomeced. But Beau and a CW pullet/hen have been bathed and dipped because their infestation was the worst I've seen. Beau has lost some weight so he and his pullet will be given some extras like yogurt, scrambled eggs, 20% protein feed and calf manna. Also some red cell in the mix.
Beau likes to take his harem to all parts of the yard around the house and into the garden every day. They also like the rolled oats and game feed the geese get so they visit the goose pen too. The sparrows have been everywhere. Working on making a sparrow trap to set up in the hen house.
I simply hate mites and lice and fleas on the dogs and flies and ticks and snakes and the list grows.....

I just got what I think is a German Spitzhauben last week. Is this what they look like?

She is so thin, and only weighs about as much as her feathers. If I can get her back to good health, I'll be looking for a roo for her.

She looks like a Splash Polish sort of, Tony. She's sure pretty. If you find yourself in need of a Spitzhauben boy I have one for you lol
I'll get a decent picture of mine a little later when I let them out for the day so you can see what they look like.

I'm wondering if there was a wabbit and duck with an attitude involved..

Seriously though that sucks that someone would do that, I get nervous walking my own property this time of year I don't allow anyone to hunt on my place but I've seen spent casings that aren't all that old towards the back side of the woods..
LOL We don't let the kids play in the woods or walk through them to get to the neighbors house during this time of year either. No hunting signs all over the property but I don't trust people to really obey those. Hopefully your roo recovers from the wound and the shock of being shot. How is he today?

We lost another bird yesterday. It was Nathanael's little black bantam EE. We got her last Febuary at auction she was supposed to be a BA chick but never grew with the rest like they did. Then out came her muffs and beard lol. She was the sweetest thing ever. I didn't let Nathanael set any of her eggs since we didn't need any more chicks from that pen right now and now regret that I didn't let him keep any to try to hatch. But he hasn't mentioned that yet. He was sad to find her in her coop as if she was asleep. He called me at work to see if he could give her coop a heatlamp. I told him yes go ahead (I mean what is another light bulb lol) But by time I got home from work she had already died and he had taken care of her. I think tonight I will add Red Cell to all the water dishes in hopes of curbing some of this. It may not help but it can't hurt.

Where can I get an oral antibiotic? And I havent tried neosporin yet, but I think I will today. It looks horribly painful, and the poor thing is afraid of ALL people. I let him out to free range last night, and he seemed happy, even topped a hen, and flapped his wings a little bit. Hes eating and drinking well. The people thought he was a turkey, or a quail. Until they shot his wing and he made tons of chicken noises. The gun they were hunting with was a 30/30 shotgon. I am still upset over this whole ordeal. Its a wonder they left my property alive.

I was laying in bed last night thinking about the poor chicken with the shot wing & starting wondering if maybe he was hit with something small like game shot. I know there are times where DH & friends get a little trigger happy and will shot at anything that moves when target practicing. However we have no neighbors -- we are surrounded by pasture on all sides, so there is no threat to anyone's animals if the are firing at moving brush. I don't imagine the person that hit the chicken did so intentionally, we all no chickens are fragile & it doesn't take much to loose one. I would like to think who ever hit the chicken doesn't know they hit it. At least it makes me feel better to think that. How is he doing today????

Yesterday we focused on cleaning the house - today we are taking care of all the animals & maybe putting up the Christmas tree.
