I was laying in bed last night thinking about the poor chicken with the shot wing & starting wondering if maybe he was hit with something small like game shot. I know there are times where DH & friends get a little trigger happy and will shot at anything that moves when target practicing. However we have no neighbors -- we are surrounded by pasture on all sides, so there is no threat to anyone's animals if the are firing at moving brush. I don't imagine the person that hit the chicken did so intentionally, we all no chickens are fragile & it doesn't take much to loose one. I would like to think who ever hit the chicken doesn't know they hit it. At least it makes me feel better to think that. How is he doing today????
Yesterday we focused on cleaning the house - today we are taking care of all the animals & maybe putting up the Christmas tree.

Thank you for your concerns. He seems as if he is doing fine, But I know his wing hurts. The hunters thought that they had seen some turkey or quail. My chickens do sometimes play near the brush line, but they NEVER go deep into the woods. With him being a rooster, Im thinking maybe he found some "Treats" for his girls and thats what led him near that area? I just dont know.

You can get some oral antibiotics at Lumber 2 or feed stores. For a wound, I think topical is best. Neosporin is pretty goood. Since he is free ranging and topping hens, I bet he is on the mend.

I got a very interesting large egg from our buff Minorca "Baby Buff". I thought I would share the picture with you all, and just so you know, She DID in fact take the day after off from laying any eggs. She was very proud of her large egg!

I have lost 4 young birds this week from this year's hatch. Two were d'Anvers and two were about six weeks old.
And I've treated the coop for mites since they have been found on 4 adults. I checked those lost birds...no mites. All birds have been ivomeced. But Beau and a CW pullet/hen have been bathed and dipped because their infestation was the worst I've seen. Beau has lost some weight so he and his pullet will be given some extras like yogurt, scrambled eggs, 20% protein feed and calf manna. Also some red cell in the mix.
Beau likes to take his harem to all parts of the yard around the house and into the garden every day. They also like the rolled oats and game feed the geese get so they visit the goose pen too. The sparrows have been everywhere. Working on making a sparrow trap to set up in the hen house.
I simply hate mites and lice and fleas on the dogs and flies and ticks and snakes and the list grows.....

We lost another bird yesterday. It was Nathanael's little black bantam EE. We got her last Febuary at auction she was supposed to be a BA chick but never grew with the rest like they did. Then out came her muffs and beard lol. She was the sweetest thing ever. I didn't let Nathanael set any of her eggs since we didn't need any more chicks from that pen right now and now regret that I didn't let him keep any to try to hatch. But he hasn't mentioned that yet. He was sad to find her in her coop as if she was asleep. He called me at work to see if he could give her coop a heatlamp. I told him yes go ahead (I mean what is another light bulb lol) But by time I got home from work she had already died and he had taken care of her. I think tonight I will add Red Cell to all the water dishes in hopes of curbing some of this. It may not help but it can't hurt.

I'm getting pretty disillusioned. I go out to take a picture of my Spitz's plus a picture of the pullet-turned-cockerel for Tony and he couldn't stand up, real weak. I put him inside to give him an injection of Tylan200 (grabbing at straws) and by the time I got done letting the other birds out he'd already died. The Spitz had always been super super thin since I got them, I've treated them for coccidia twice and dewormed them 3 times. The bigger cockerel had been sneezing and I added Gallimycin to their water but I think I'll give him Tylan200 injections, at this rate it can't hurt. This one *hadn't been sneezing and they all seemed perfectly fine yesterday. Something weird seems to be going on. Maybe this happens to people's chickens every year? Last year when I lost a couple the vet claimed it was e coli, but there's no test for it. Maybe it was just this whole "wild birds migrating south" thing. They're spreading diseases that our young birds have never been exposed to because they just hatched this year. It's disheartening to me and I sure can't keep doing this, losing this many birds that I've hatched and raised and loved. Not knowing which spring hatchlings are even going to be alive by Christmas? Too hard for me.
Anyway, Tony-here's a couple shots of the Spitzhaubens. The remaining cockerel still 'looks' sick to me (his eyes) but he acts fine.
I also got the sweetest sounding red factor Canary last night, he's adorable and has the nicest little singing voice. Isn't he cute?? I'm loving the caged indoor birds. At least I have control over what they're exposed to. Thank God my little Serama boy is inside.

Lost two hens this morning. One with the sniffles I had to cull and the other was a CW hen that appeared to be egg bound. She died in my arms as I was giving her a once over.
Spent the morning checking babies, teens, pullets, hens and roos for any sign of sniffles and gave Tylan 50 shots to those with watery eyes even if they weren't yet breathing hard. Set up Duramycin waterers and ACV waterers in every pen section. Four pullets/hens that have gone broody won't be deterred. So I gave them ceramic eggs and golf balls.
Going to move cows so will check in later.

Ya, that thing was huge! My husband knows nothing about chickens, but when he opened the egg carton to get a couple eggs... he grabbed that one, and said "Is the chicken okay that layed this egg???". It was rather funny. But she is finally laying a decent size egg steadily now since she has layed that "bullet" size egg!
