Are RIR good layers?
There is a man in Catoosa on CL advertising 2 day old chicks for $1.00. It is tempting to buy 10 of them and hope to get 6 hens from that batch and 4 roosters in the freezer.

RIR was not the breed I was looking for.... but they seem a decent breed.
We bought 3 POL pullets from him last summer, they are good layers. Lost one at Christmas to a stray dog. Standard hatchery-type stock, not for showing, but great for eggs! We got at least 2 eggs per day last fall, probably twice per week we got 3. Those girls are among our flightiest chickens, but they were obviously not handled at all when they were young. I would say if you wanted large brown eggs and got them as chicks so you could socialize them they would be a good deal. I hear people say how curious and friendly their RIR are, and I assume it's because they were hand raised.
