***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Oh,. the point I was getting at, is a question. Since mine were 'suppose' to be siblings but bred and had kids, are they not like cattle where if you have twins of opposite sexes the female is sterile? She gets too much testosterone from the male when they are in the womb. I know dogs have different sexes in their littters and wondered if cattle were just the exception.
nope, that dose not happen in goats, it common for goat to have multiples but it is not in cattle so i don't know if that has something to do with it or not.

Welcome to LilBeaverDoms and Red Feather. Glad to see more new folks.

Critterwoman, I ordered the leg bands from Stromberg's ..got the 500 assorted because it was less expensive that way...10 colors.
The calf has pneumonia ...symptoms started yesterday evening. Mom has been giving the calf attention, but it has been too weak today to try nursing. ...walks a sort distance and lays down. Treating it with antibiotics in the milk we get from the cow. The calf will take about a cup from a bottle and the has to be tube fed. Keeping our fingers crossed that the warm nights will help......

Watching four more first time soon to be moms in the lot now. And there are three more probably next week..hope they all have no problems. All the calves borns will be out of our Express Angus bull.

Worked in the brooder room today changing out the wood shavings and cleaning banty cages. It was warm enough in there to turn on the vent fan. Lots of chicks make lots of dust! Enjoyed looking them over and noting which ones to keep and which ones to sell...will begin putting pink leg bands on the ones to sell and red ones for the keepers/layers born this year along with the leg band color for their sire. at least that's the plan.

That's correct. In cattle twins, while each is developing in its own bag like goats, there is a great possibility for hormone transfer. Two twin bulls or two twin heifers...there is no issue. where twins include a bull and a heifer, the heifer is considered a "free martin" and not suitable for breeding.

What a difference a day makes. Sunshine was up walking this morning and her fever is better...at least the swelling in her face is down and her nose was wet. She took about a cup of milk before quitting so still had to tube her. But progress is progress. All her body functions are working and Mom is licking the heck out of her face and ears. Mom walked into the squeeze chute this morning just like a milk cow to her stall. Whew!
Had another baby thru the night and it was up nursing at 6 am. Mom is doing great.
The difference in rain and temperatures knocked Sunshine down for the count. The new baby is up and bucking already.

SIL is coming this morning to load a trailer with aged manure for his garden beds...we have plenty. Hubby shoves it up into a pile with the hay and turns it frequently with the tractor. We always have a ready supply of manure compost every year for the gardens.

Have more seeds to plant this morning too and then I'll begin banding the older chicks. Have some in the brooder that need to go to the outside brooder pen too.

Guess ill make NewCastle on the 20th. Hope someone posts about the sale this evening...and any plans for the get together that is in the planning stages...let me know what I can do to help.

Glad the baby is doing better. I was going to plant seeds yesterday but the spots I prepared were standing water. That is a good/bad thing it may mean I will have to purchase plants and not do seeds this spring, but I'm hoping it will mean more water retention this summer.

  • Just brought by some started americana chicks to the Newcastle auction. Lots of home made brooders there; a few 'tractor' type things; a bunch of turkeys; a large group of silkies - bunch of black and a trio (I think) of white/greyish/blue ones. Oh, and what I think might be a mix between silkie and frizzle...several of those - mostly buffs - but they look different from each other - perhaps sibs with the mixed bag of genetics. There was also one very scared/****** but beautiful cockatiel with that lovely yellow lacy color. I am partial to cockatiels as they were my first bird. No wonder it was terrified...with all of the big loud birds so near!
I will be wearing a bright orange shirt with dark blue trim. Would love to meet some of you...especially if someone knows about what to look for in show type silkies. I am drooling over them, but know I know too little about them to pick something my kids might be able to compete with.

Nanakat,
I sure hope the calf starts to recover...it was a rough start for her. Bad enough to lose a calf - but even worse if you get to know it for a while first (we lost a named one last year). I dont know if it hurts more when so much effort was made...kind of balances out a little when you know that you did all you could. Fingers crossed!
