***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Look at this snow! I'm just south of Guthrie and once it started it didn't take long to get out of control. I was supposed to pick up 2 birds from Kass today. She called me and told me to look outside and we decided on postponing it a week :-o The snow wasn't even supposed to start until this afternoon. We spent yesterday settling birds in for the coming weather and passing out bags of shavings. All the babies under 6 months have heaters &/or heat lamps, most are in the room on the deck. I used to love this kind of weather so much, now I dread it and hate it because my birds are cold.

Spent yesterday refilling the coops with dry straw and moving feeders inside the coops. waterers are still outside because I don't want additional moisture inside the coop in order to avoid frostbite.
This morning I was out adding hot water to the tubs when it started snowing. By the time we were done feeding the herds and me feeding the inside caged birds, we had an inch and a half. And it is still snowing. We can now see the buildings 1/4 mile from us.

Look at this brilliant idea for a large scale chicken feeder!  So going to do something like this... I much prefer feeding weekly than daily especially when it's cold!

Musky has something similar...more vertical with a central tube. Nice thing is the wild birds can't get as much of your feed too. That site had some good gardening ideas too.

Boaz has this look on his face that says "You know you want me"! You should play the song "I'm sexy and I know it" and see if he dances LOL!

They are cute, but if you have to keep them in the house, don't the roosters wake you up crowing every morning? Just asking, don't know if my family would like being awaken from crowing inside every morning...lol. Thanks

I had a class rooster I got from June. The kids named him Mr. Boo. On the weekends I brought him home and as long as I kept the cage covered he did not crow..

Did you get any?
I did not get anything at the auction aside from chocolate covered cheese cake... And it is good!!!

That was a great idea.. I love how he built those feeders and there is also one on how to build a waterer which I already had that design just on a bit larger scale.. After feeding the chickens and wrenching my back yesterday I think I am going to be building feeders like these, since it is not as high up... With this idea you can go much bigger if you have more birds. I have a 55 gallon plastic barrel with a snap ring lid and I think it is going to be the next feeder. Also going to go buy a rubbermade trash can to make the second one.. These hold about 140lbs of feed.. I would like to get to the point I only have to feed every couple of weeks... I know I am lazy but I like to spend my time playing with the birds.

Well we have over 3 inches of snow so far and it is falling really hard right now... I got up at 6:30 this morning and we had about 1 inch now we are looking at almost 4" and it is still snowing.. Not thinking we are going to have school tomorrow.. Awww shucks!!!!

Same. After we got chickens I DREAD the cold weather and especially snow. Not because I have to go out and feed and take care of them in it but because its so cold. They hang out in their coop on days like this and don't even want to come out. I can't blame them though. I have a heat lamp in there so they are a little more comfy. Same with the bantam hut.

LOL! actually you get used to it- tiny crows- but then i have been hearing Sonny's crow, that boy is still at the praticing stage, deep crow- i suspect when he really gets it down, no one will miss who it is-

Oh wow he is looking so huge and beautiful! Still haven't heard any crows from the other two... nor any eggs though. They have gotten more use to me and aren't so afraid to come close when I have treats but they still keep a little distance. This morning they were the ones gobbling up the fermented feed I took to them. After the others saw the Cochins chowing down they dove in. Then I moved it to the outside of the coop and they were like, "Uh uh! Were staying in where it's warm and dry!". So the feed is probably frozen by now. This weather is so annoying.

Those marans babies were getting SO huge that I had to get them into something bigger. I had hubby whip me up a box (just the walls, no top or bottom). Then he put some wire that we used for fencing on the top. Cut a hole and put on a door. For the bottom it just sets in the garage and I threw shaving in there. It is 2 ft tall and 4x4. I was thinking these would be awesome to put chicks in and just place the heat lamp on the top. Should I have hubby make some and take them to the auction? I mean, how many people would be interested in these things? It sure has been a life saver for the marans! Think I will have him make me a 3x3 for the chicks I am praying will hatch. Well, if anyone wants one I'm sure hubby can whip one up for you too. You could easily put an adult chicken in it. The marans keep thumping the top trying to get on top but the wire is pretty heavy duty. Put a wire latch an NOTHING will get out!

The auction was fun!.....very amusing too... I got that one blrw young roo (14)... Then was second bidder on the really nice blrw pairs - I stopped at 29 and they went for 30, the best three were taken. I declined second pick. They went for auction again and got all the way up to 40$!
So I was good - came back with a young roo that I have been looking for... some peanut butter balls and strawberries.
Great seeing you guys!
Did you see the peacocks go? 115+ish each....
