***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I am trying to stay positive throughout all this cold weather and tell myself that the bugs won't be so bad this year. Stay safe everyone.
Same. Trying to find my happy place while the snow keeps falling.

Sorry all. Would have multi posted but I just saw this as soon as I hit "send" on my last one. Robin, you really did a wonder with him! I just love the pic with his eyes closed! He looks like he is really enjoying it! 4 inches! I don't think we got even that much! You guys got snow dumped on big time!!! I can see maybe, MAYBE an inch and half sitting on things outside. It actually stopped snowing and the sun is shining. Still doesn't make the temp any better.

Finally stopped snowing- 7 inches on top of the minicoop.... none have left the main coop young guineas must have decided they are fair weather guineas, they are staying in the coop too

We have a dusting of snow on the ground here in far Northeast Ok with blue skies to the west. Wish it would stay that way, but they are saying different for Tuesday. Suppose to go to Tulsa on Wednesday for Dr, appts, may cancel them. On the good side the chickens are staying in the house today.and I have an Black Australorp sitting on 11 eggs since the 29th. The daddy is a Barred Plymouth Rock Roo, the hen eggs are a mix of Barred Rock, Black Australorp maybe RIR and Dark Brahama Bantam. Can't hardly wait until the end of the month to see what they turn out like.

Hi Everybody,

I haven't been able to get downstairs to my computer in a few days. Both grand babies have had sinus congestion and nighttime coughs, but no fevers, so we're playing quiet games inside.

The Checota auction (Friday night) was bigger but smaller than I expected... I expected more buyers. I think I always expect more buyers. Anyway, it was inside the new Ag facility at Checotah High School. The seats (stands???) were constructed for rubber teenagers, not "real" people. Next time I'm taking my padded lawn chair. Shelbydog, the coffee was excellent. Thank you. I'm bringing piggies in a blanket to our next auction. Dennis, Donna, and a bunch of other Okies were there. I think we need to have a secret handshake, hand signal, or greeting. Don't you?

Mr. Corzier said he expected to see more baby chicks and hatching eggs next month. I didn't buy anything. I've got baby chicks in my basement brooder for the capon clinic in March. No new birds for me

Shelbydog and Kyzmette, your baby girls can stay until they are fully feathered. They're doing great. I'll be splitting the group into two brooders next weekend. The barred rock babies seem to grow faster than the rest.

We've had four inches of snow here. Cardinals and finches have been at the hanging feeder most of the day. The chickens don't want to come out. I don't blame them. It's cold.

I have been doing some reading on mereks, a friend on facebook is dealing with it- anyway, has anyone read if specific breeds are more resistant? I have read dottes and leghorns...? hmmm

Lots and lots of snow here. Chickens have refused to come out, can't blame them, I pretty much have too, and I have hair on my neck, well at least hair covering my neck.

Coral, I have put in for being off on the Sat before the capon class, so I should be well rested bright eyed and bushy tailed (at least eventually, lol lol lol)

The only thing I have ever read about resistance and Merecks is that if you expose your flock to turkeys or turkey poop they well get turkey mereks which is much less severe and immune to chicken mereks, but I do not know if that is true at all. The vaccine for mereks keeps them from showing, but not catching as far as I have ever figured out. That is the full extent of my mereks immunity / resistance knowledge.

Thanks Kass, i do understand there are different strains, and vaccinating is supposed to made them immune to a point, but i have been following a thread on b yc where the chick was vaccinated and is now fighting mereks- i wonder if its like getting a chickenpox vaccine, you get a milder case? just one of those stray thoughts, i'll look into the turkey idea too- someone on FB is also fighting it in the flock she has
