***OKIES in the BYC III ***

snow missed us too- but thats ok.... for a winter lover like me, thats saying alot!

my little silky rusty- don't know if this is crossbeak or just the beak aligned wrong?? The top beak is curving right at the tip, but will be filing it

isn't that the seed in finch food? little white seeds? My guys love it when i give it to them, not very often though-
Yes; it's packaged as bird feed. I bought it to lure house sparrows into a live trap, but it was catching more native birds that are wintering off the strewn livestock feed and grain. The trap caught 12 House Sparrows, and 119 others. According to my game camera, the House Sparrow isn't as aggressive as we tend to think. The other birds would run them off from the trap.

Question for all you people who raise furry legged chickens... I'm having a terrible time with these Brahma bantam hatchlings. I'm going to boost the vitamins on the breeding pair, because the chicks aren't thriving, and they're all being born with spraddleleg. The poor babies spend almost all their time on their backs.

I've been trying the bandaid brace trick, but because of the fuzziness of the legs, the bandaids aren't sticking. And when they do stick, they stick to the feathers. Is there a better way of handling this?

Although it might not matter, if they don't survive. Poor little babies.

Rinda, what was it you treated your birds with when their babies didn't thrive? I'm considering treating this as a bacterial infection, just in case.

A short piece of yarn with slip knots on each end make a good hobble for fuzzy legged chicks.
Hope this makes sense...
Stick two tooth picks into a piece of styrofoam spaced the width of the chick legs. Make your slip knot on one end of the yarn and slide it onto the first tooth pick. The second knot is a larks head knot. Both knots will slide and self tighten as the chick moves. Keep one knot on the toothpick while you place the other end on the chicks first leg. Then open the second knot to insert the second foot and slide it closed.

Some people like the self adhesive athletic tape but I haven't found it too self adhesive.....

Might trim the bottom beak a little so the top covers the bottom. Do you have a small piece of brick or a rough branch in the cage for him to rub his beak on so he can file it himself?

Are you trying to stick the bandaid to their legs or to itself? That's the best way I've done it with feathered legs. You are right it does sound like a vitamin deficiency. As soon as they hatch give each chick a drop of Poly-vi-sol vitamins without iron (sold for babies in the drugstore). If I do this as soon as I see a chick struggling I can save 90% of my chicks with leg problems. Repeat daily for as long as they have trouble walking.

If you suspect bacterial infection, I would treat with tetracycline. Treat for two weeks- adults and the babies that hatch from eggs laid before or during treatment. When that stopped the deaths but only temporarily I needed something stronger and went to a prescription antibiotic from the vet, it was generic bactrim.
