***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Wow! Our slight chance for rain turned into 3 inches. We are in that little part of the state in Lincoln County showing flooding! The ponds are overflowing...so needed! That fell in two hours.

Going out to check all the pens and make sure the drains are working properly.

Hope everyone is okay.

@NanaKat I could just hug you!! i have been so stressed over how to make it safe for them!!

I did rehome the remaining eggs yesterday, and this cute little bugger hatched saturday nite, so she got 14 eggs and this bonus

Did anyone else come home with poison ivy from POOPS besides me and Kass? Or are we just lucky like that!

I am ridiculously allergic to the stuff, I don't even have to touch it. My hands and face look like I have leprosy.

I am very allergic to it too so i'm allways on the look out for it i saw some growing near where i was sitting. But i didn't brake out I have learnd a trick though if you spray rubbing alcohol on it removes the oil and keeps it from spredding all over you skin you can do this at any time. if i come in contact with it i spray the area with alcohol as soon as i can and it keeps it from spreding all over i just brake out where i was touched by the plant.

POOPS Attendees: Sorry to hear about the poison ivy. Rafael has allergies, but he didn't have any bites or rashes when we got home.

Robin: I hope the battle of the chiggers goes in your favor. The kitten-strength meds makes sense. Congrats on the new keets : )

The rain is coming down in sheets here. Hope everyone can stay warm and dry. May have to treat my juveniles and babies for cocci. They are all on pasture now, and this is the first rain for them.

went and checked on mama guinea, she had all 1 tucked under her and wasn't budging, i'd rather she go to the shelter i made, but i hope all the guinea dooms dayers on FB are wrong- i pray God gave her some common sense!

I just started letting my chickens free range. Will I need to treat them for cocci too?? My property hasn't had chickens until a few months ago

Watch for symptoms: unthrifty appearance, hunched posture, bloody poop. If you see any of this, treat for cocci. This is a young-bird illness. You're not likely to see cocci in adult birds.

Speaking of guineas....

Somebody please help me figure out how to keep these babies alive! Is there a trick to it? Every day I've had them, I've found one more dead in their brooder box. I made sure to teach them from day one how to use the nipple waterer, but I truly believe they are SO stupid, that they're forgetting from one day to the next how to use the blasted thing. I've given up and I put in a bowl of water and the nipple waterer, for the ones that are so dumb they can't figure out how to use the bowl. I still found another dead baby in the box this morning. I feel horrible thinking that I keep killing these poor babies!

Any guinea keet tips and tricks you can give would be appreciated.

I want to see the answer to this too. Of the 17 chicks we got from Murray McMurray, 15 died in 13 days. Yet, the other two, a Rhode Island Red and a Pearl White Leghorn, are thriving.
My guineas were pecking at the nipple waterer so much, that they were soaking the brooder box. Personally, I have come to the conclusion, that I might have had too many chicks in one brooder. 17, in a 2'x3' brooder. I even moved them to a second identical brooder, with the same result. Yet, the guineas, and turkeys, thrived. For those two weeks, every day, I'd find a dead one at the bottom of the pileup, under the heat lamp. I never figured it out. All 17, were vaccinated for the two diseases that were recommended. Yet, the "Meat and Egg combo" package all died, and the two breed specific birds, are doing well. Hmmmm. I don't know. But, as for your guineas, I don't know what to tell you. Let's see what folks more knowledgeable than me, have to say. But, mine, LOVE the nipple waterer. They are outside maybe 40' from me, and I can hear the tapping at the nipples, as I type this.
