***OKIES in the BYC III ***

X100!!! We were all rooting for bumpers. :) And look at how lovely she is, she certainly deserves to be spoiled.

I recently realized we crested the 100 birds mark. Woa. That happened fast.

Chicken math snuck up on you? :p

I probably could have hit it if every egg in the bators had hatched. Luckily, I totally screwed up the temps on the foam bator, so I'll be lucky to get anything out of it. Of course, that's where the White Faced Black Spanish are.

Oh no!!! I'm so sorry. And I think the duck math is what got us in trouble.

Deleting the sad rooster story because I don't want to upset anyone.

Wow, Coral! You've really had it lately. Anyway, glad you're better! This is one of the two seasons we really have to be vigilant.
My doctor took me off prescription allergy medication with a decongestant. I'm now using OTC Zyrtec and my decongestant is NeilMed Sinus Rinse, and all natural product. It simulates the body surfing, which always resulted in sinus irrigation, I did as a teen in California (waaaaaaaaay back in the day). (And I don't have to put on a bathing suit!) The sinus rinse is the easier way to flush one's sinuses with saline solution. I don't like neti pots. Too much trouble, and the newest version looks a little like a Smurf Dangle. For those who don't know about sinus irrigation, my doctor's method seems to work best. Plug one nostril, bend forward over a sink, squeeze the saline solution into your sinuses, and let the goop and saline exit through the mouth. Spit and dance a bit, and then repeat on the other side. Any solution left in the bottle should be sniffed to clean out the back of one's nasal passages. Once proficient, a person can look forward to irrigation at home, but I'm not brave enough to attempt it at work (yet).

They and the honorary rabbits Rudy and Bella are in heaven today w/ all the new ground and grass to explore.

Coral, so sorry for your long multi sickness, glad you are on the mend though. Those paintings are awesome and what a cool date night. Have you been able to hatch any nakeds yet?

Sharkmandan, I don't have much experience w/ any incubators except the brinsea. The broodies are doing a good job for me this year, but I don't need to hatch on a level that most do.

Anyone have any brilliant ways of preserving eggs? (eating eggs)

Sounds like great fun for Rudy and Bella. I'm collecting eggs from Hercule and his three NN girls for the next ten days for incubation. I'll give Hercule a mottled java hen and one of my Brabanter hens before making the second collection. I want to see what happens with the crosses.

Thanks for the kind words. I feel much better, but my voice cracks when I talk, so my whisper was actually more pleasant. Hope this goes away soon.

I do what Rinda suggested: crack into ice cube trays, freeze, pop into freezer bags, and use later.
Thanks for the replies. It just seems to be better to hatch all of my own. That is, if I can get a customer base going.
My main goal right now, is to pare down to just certain specialty breeds. . . I'm thinking of getting into a different breed, like a Wheaten Marans or a Welsummer, for those super dark eggs.
My Brinsea died (of unknown causes), and I replaced it with a Genesis Hovabator 1588 from a guy in Florida. He and another vendor are in a price war, and he keeps a few in his vehicle so that he can ship immediately. I got mine in two days. He's got the 1588 Genesis plus turner for 183.99 and 15.99 shipping ($199.98) or just the incubator for 134.94 and 16.99 shipping ($151.93), which is what I bought, since I already had the turner. His eBay seller name is thesmartestfarmer.

I'm going to collect eggs from my Black Tailed Buff Marns in a few weeks. Can I send you some? They lay darker than any other bird I keep.

Genesis 1588 is the incubator I use also. I have an extra turner that I can use to keep eggs rocking until I have an incubator empty. It beats having to turn them yourself. Just put them on a flat surface somewhere out of the way.

Coral, so glad you're much better! I've used a Neti pot for more than a year, and it DOES make a difference. Does your saline solution come in individual, disposable bottles? I don't have a problem with the Neti pot, but the solution has to be mixed up each day.

I think I'm going to try just that. I have an automatic ice maker, so, I haven't had ice cube trays in years. But I think I can swing a few at Walmart today.
I did a bunch of research last night, thought I'd found the best price at Smith Poultry for $139 plus shipping, then found the 1588 at GQF for $134.95. If their shipping is better, I think I will probably buy direct from them.
On the eggs, HECK YES. I will send you a PM with my address. I would love to hatch some of them out. It was some of your Marans eggs, at the Capon Clinic, that got me interested in wanting birds who lay very dark brown eggs. So, absolutely, yes, please.

Question for yall...I sell my eggs for consumption...my layers pay for themselves! :) yesterday I was asked if I would consider selling hatching eggs from my SL wyandottes. I was planning on branching to this area in a year or two. I have no idea how to price. I don't want to ask to little and then have people to expect that in the future. They are good quality. Not perfect. I obtained them from a girl in Duncan that had showed them. I was thinking 15$ dz? Am I crazy for that?

Sounds like a good starting point, and judge how it goes from there. Good luck jumping into the hatching egg business!

400

Can I just tell you all how much I love this sassy sweet ol gal? When I got her and her sister they were very beat up and both had open, infected wounds on their backs and sides and very few feathers. I was pretty sure the sister wasn't going to make it and she never came around to be as sweet as Ms Shirley here. They don't lay much but go broody if eggs are left for a couple days. Anyway, their toenails are ridiculously long, does anyone have any tips for trimming them in the least traumatic way possible?
Also - I have a couple extra chicks and more on the way! If anyone is looking for a couple let me know. I have 2 barnevelders (I think are a pair) 3 EEs and a couple male (pretty sure but it's still early to tell) Salmon Faverolles. I hope to have bantam Cochins available in a couple weeks.

Firefly have you ever trimmed a dog's nails? Same concept. Look for the quick and cut just before it. Then file any sharp points. I find it works best if I make three cuts- two angled cuts in a V then a cut at the tip to blunt it, then a light filing to fix the shape.
