***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I would like Muesky's recipe too!

Last night we got 3 inches of rain!!!!! Red and Gracie both spent the night on the bed with me. Red was all over the place...first at the head of the bed, then under the covers, too hot, moved to the head of the bed, under my pillow.....and he shook almost all night. Gracie, now deaf, just snoozed at my feet. Poor Roger slept in his recliner and never knew it was storming.

Yesterday while cleaning the brooder room, I put one of the broody hens in a wall cage/ Then at 10 pm I took her 13 chicks that hatched the other day. She about ate my hand as I was putting chicks under her. She is doing great with them. Im taking her 7 more this morning.
One of my Cochin hens is sitting tight on an empty nest in the outside Cochin pen. I'm considering taking some to her.

One of our young pheasants escaped from the inside pen and then out thru the brooder room a couple of days ago. Phantom is seen around the yard and garden, but can't be caught. CJarvis warned me that if one escaped you just cant catch them....he was right!

I moved 17 juveniles out of the barn to the juvenile pen. Put 9 young birds on the floor in the brooder room and put 30 two week old chicks in the brooder room cages. Then I moved 20 quail to the big brooder in the hot tub room and moved chicks to the hen in the barn. Whew!

Hope everyone has a great Saturday planned.

Muesky's mix - Peppermint, citronella, cedar, basil, rosemary and juniper (if you can find it)

Hey MaryJo, do you put up corn like your Mom?
Last year we bought corn from a family farm off 177 hwy. don't know if they will even have corn this year, but the price was great and the sweet corn was wonderful. If they have it this year, I'll post the information.

Yesterday, the temp here reached 101 and I lost a White Wyandotte hen and a Columbian hen from the breeder pens and three juveniles in the barn. Today during the heat of the day, I sprayed down the tarps and refreshed their water.
So far 18 chicks have hatched today....these are all Columbian Wyandotte. I set another 35 in the incubator. I'm trying to get my hatch up to 100 so I can select the best five pullets and best three cockerels to add to the breed pens next year.

Uh oh I didn't know it had gotten so hot! I live about 25 miles south of Meeker but I had to go to Memphis for a few days. My daughter is taking care of the place but she can't be there all the time. I haven't gotten any phone calls so that's good. My pens are all under trees so that helps.

Yes the egg rationing is real. There are friends reporting in TX that some big bakeries are temporarily shutting down because they can't get enough eggs to stay in operation. No egg shortage here, though!!

What scares me about the egg shortage in Texas is that it will effect us eventually either in the price of baked goods or the availability of egg and egg products. Thank goodness some of my girls are laying and I haven't bought eggs in awhile.

I have duck eggs coming out of my ears. My incubator is full. We eat what we can in chicken and duck eggs and we give/sell some. But I still have way too many duck eggs with only 2 hens! Any creative ideas I can try with them?

With the egg rationing starting up, I think it's about time I actually start raising some chickens. I've browsed this forum for a year+ debating whether or not I could spend the time on them and I think I can. How long does it take to build your average chicken coop with a run included?

Sort of off topic but has anyone heard of Jade Helm 15 going on in the lower states?

We have an escaped grow out rabbit the same, we call him Moby Dick (he isn't white, but Gary keeps trying to catch him)

We had an escaped rabbit too. It ran around for 2 weeks before we finally were able to catch it. When we did it was fatter than its sister from the same litter. She was eating all the grass and weeds.

Our escapee likes to eat w/ the chickens, their fermented grains. (which we feed to the rabbits anyway)
