I planted sweet corn July 15 one year - it was delicious when it ripened in October.

I planted some this year on or near july 15th we'll see how it goes.

Wayne, Had wind blow down an outdoor cage once and captured both of the pair of lovebirds using these two methods. The other birds will call them in.
1) set a cage next to the cage the bird left and keep it stocked with food and water. The hen will enter the cage to roost at night and you can shut the door.
2) hang a small cage from a tree limb...we used a cord and tied it to a chair to suspend the cage above our heads but so we could lower it to keep food and waterr cups on the floor of the cage. Tie a string to the door and run the string inside the cage and out the opposite side. With the string long enough for you to hide nearby you can catch the bird by pulling the string and swinging the door closed.

Don, so sorry to hear about your friend. So many small town businessmen with character and history have slipped away in recent years leaving big holes in their comunities. Hope the grocery/feed/social nook remains a place to see friends and enjoy them on Saturdays.

Well there has been alot of talk going around that we are no longer having our auction we are still having it next sale is aug 6 same time same place. On a sad note tho one of our regulars out at the auction bob knight has passed away prayers to thefamiyl

Two questions...
1) what are you doing about flies this year? I've used those fly tapes and snag hundreds at a time. I don't necessarily want to use a spray but this is getting ridiculous! I'm sweepng down the concrete in the barn to keep it clean but the flies are drawn to the metal feed storage cans. The flies are also in the open run and in the hen house.

2) Those using Oxine. The floor in my hen house is a dirt floor about 10 x 10. We cleaned out the deep litter this spring. The roost is hinged to the wall and is raised ever so often to clean out the accumulated droppings. With the heat I have been spraying the walls and floor with water. Can I spray down the floor with a gallon of activated Oxine to disinfect the floor and reduce an ammonia odor that is beginning to occur? The hen house is due another scrub-down soon and I may use Oxine this time.

Flies: cannot stand pinesol don't know why but it works, put it in a garden sprayer and wash the pens down, it works in barns too spray the floor, walls, and rafters.

Oxine for a disinfectant you can't beat it, do not activate the oxine if you like the animals just mix it 1/2 oz. per gallon and spray liberally. I use this quite frequently on our pens inside and out, as well as adams spray for pest control.
