***OKIES in the BYC III ***

two bantams were too pretty to let their combs and wattles get frost bitten
funny
Even with the coop wrapped in reflective barrier and with a heat lamp it is still really cold in there when its -10 outside.
I was thinking about moving mine to the brooder box since my numbers are small enough now to fit in there.
I have one rooster that i should just butcher that keeps getting kicked out 1st thing in the morning and can't get back in until everyone else is gone to bed and settled down.
To lazy to butcher even if he is just an extra and I ordered a bunch of straight run already.

I did a little "youtube" research yesterday on trapping bobcats. Part is hang a bird wing, turkey feather or tin foil on a string/fishing line to get it attracted to the general area. I watched one of the horses eat that piece of tin foil this morning.

This temp has got to suck even for chickens. We cleared a bunch of ground in front of the coop yesterday so they would have some room to sun on dry ground. We brought three single combed roosters in last night. One had some damage and two bantams were too pretty to let their combs and wattles get frost bitten. Even with the coop wrapped in reflective barrier and with a heat lamp it is still really cold in there when its -10 outside. Its rare to get this low here, but I may upgrade the new coop and the old one to better handle subzero temps. Either that or just put then all in the greenhouse with a heater on 😁
Years ago my brother and I built a greenhouse. The greenhouse ended up being more chicken coop area rather than a place to grow plants. :lau
He would then tease me about the greenhouse and how we built a large sunroom for my chickens.

They really make great places for chickens as long as there is plentynif shade and outdoor access in the summer. I let mine in short term while I am growing in it if the plants are big enough.

Right about now it would be a good/GREAT time for a sun room for the chickens or ME.

Its crazy how warm they can get in the very cold winter if the sun is shining. That said, they need supplemental heat at night in this type of cold for sure. We have a 10x20 hoop house that will probably be converted for chickens pretty soon. Anyway, we were in it shaking some snow off of it when we spotted a frozen to death dove that had sought shelter in it. Both ends are open so it was below zero in there several nights lately. But get in a closed greenie or hoophouse with a little sun and it is like an oasis in winter. Especially in one full of plants.

Earlier our house water was slow and the temps were coming up. So I didn't worry. I had to go to town and came back to no improvement. SOOO I put the diesel heater in the man way (which I need to go pull) under the house split some wood and the water stopped. Wondered what I did that wasn't right to make my water freeze.
Nothing, the water tower ran out. I'm close enough that I'm lucky and one of the last to run out.

Oh my goodness, the water tower ran out of water? Where are you located?
