***OKIES in the BYC III ***

It will be about six weeks for the wound to heal as it was left open to keep out the infection and then rehab and dr said it could be as long as six months. im already about to go nuts sitting around but at least im going to get to keep my leg so thats a big plus. may have a slight limp but i can live with that..

I'm still here.

I think we need a fall poops! Or a list of what everyone is buying/selling. I can't keep up with who's got what! I've sworn off buying anything more until I get my pens figured out again and another pen built.

Also, I'm thinking of trying out this showing stuff. I've shown many dif animals before but never a chicken. I think I need a tutorial. What kinds of things do I need to do to get ready for a show? Are there any novice shows around here? (okc and surrounding areas)

Maribeth, my best guess is two pairs and 3 youngsters, but could be wrong. The first "pair" we got looked fairly young. We got a mother and a youngster in one trap one evening. It could be one pair and 5 youngsters, as they were caught several different nights so we couldn't compare sizes on all of them.

Evening Everyone,

Charlie - Great to meet you. I've got the cockerels in pens facing the ladies they'll get to know next month. I've already seen the hens kick at the dirt and call to their girlfriends to, "Come see what I found!" What a bunch of flirts. Our painters were in awe of the size of both birds. They had never seen chickens with such massive legs before. When I explained the goal, to raise big healthy meat birds, they thought it was an exceptional idea. They saw my oversized RIR and NHR roosters earlier in the week, but they hadn't ever considered that a bird could be broad like a battleship. I think they may become customers for pasture-reared meat birds in the spring

I didn't see any other BYC folks at the flea market today. I did see lots of people though, and I was sold out by 10:00. One gentleman stopped by at 7:00 but said he had some other shopping to do first. When he returned at 9:30, all I had left were a couple of ducks. He made an apologetic phone call to his wife. I hope he's able to convince her that shopping for a few T-shirts (he had them over his arm) was more important than the chickens she'd asked for.

Sorry to hear about all the varmint trouble. I've seen possums but no raccoons recently. Skunks are around, because I can smell them, but I haven't seen any since July. Vesta is the best varmint repellent we've ever had. DH still has trouble with the barking at night, but for me it's a reassurance that she's on the job.

Here are some of the pretties that we brought home with us. First the two peahens:

It didn't take much to talk my DH into two game pullets. Then he suggested picking out a cockerel to make a trio.

We also picked out two little Spangled OEGB pullets and two Quail Belgian D'Anvers pullets, because obviously we needed more birds.

All are doing well and we spent the rest of the day doing some rearranging and cleaning to make room for the new arrivals. It was nice to get out and buy some birds and see a couple of BYCers as well.

I'll hopefully have more online time after school starts.

Kids are trying to talk me into the Sedalia and Shawnee shows though to make up for the summer ones they had to miss, so who knows.

Betsy I wish I knew how to help. We've not dealt with raccoons, yet. Wonder if you could just tack up and electrify a couple of cattle panels across the target area. I don't know how that stuff works.

I don't know, but it seems those with the prettiest blue lobes always turn up boys for us. I may be biased.
