***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Good morning friends and neighbors! Can`t complain about this weather.....It`s going to be another beautiful day here in Green Country! After I feed, water and clean pens this morning I am going to finish painting a old iron gate that a friend gave me....I am going to use this when I fence in a little area in front of the barn next Spring...waste not want not! Hope y`all have a good `n today!

My friend also gave me a old Rooster door bell that I`m trying clean up, I have a coat of primmer on it but not sure about the finally color, if I had artistic skills I would do some detail work but I will probably stick to a solid color.

It has been awesome weather. I am doing garden/yard stuff. I have several ideas for the garden for next year to hopefully beat the drought or at least hold my own against it, but it involves set up now. I was working on the tomato beds they are about 1/3 to 1/2 done. Haven't started the heavy work on my hugelkulture/rabbit bed yet, but have settled on a den idea going to use large plastic barrels cut in 1/2, just need to figure out a lid now. Also haven't started on moving the raspberry bed and making the blueberry bed, so still lots and lots to do before spring.

Oh i like the rooster door bell very pretty.

Elbert...nice gate and rooster bell. You have a thoughtful friend.

Kennym99. Welcome and good luck with your hatch.

Kass...you are very industrious!!! Hope you didn't overdo.

Even with my best efforts to thwart my broodies, five hens are sitting on eggs. One who refused to make the move to the brooder room is sitting in a cage...on her eggs. I moved all the girls to the brooder room into nests with their eggs yesterday and watched to make sure they settled over their eggs. I was setting up the breeding pens and would have preferred the girls were in pens with mates.
You have to love broodies. Two of them start screaming at me when I come in the brooder room. When one starts, they all puff up and either scream or growl when I start feeding those bantam pairs in cages. Makes me laugh every time I go in there.

Is one of them Nasty Nellie? I told Joe about your broodies and he says he is scared!

My Wheaten Aneraucana pair are parents! Two chicks of 5 hatched today, pretty good for (almost) her first eggs.
I think my LaFleche pullets age getting ready to lay. They never go in their coop, prefer to roost on the top of it but I see they have made nests in the straw in the two nest boxes. Another one of my Cochin pullets is spending a lot of extra time in the nest box. I call this "playing hen". The cockerels play fight, why shouldn't the girls practice being a grown up chicken?

Hello all you fellow Okies!!!! I am new to chickens and new to BYC. So far I love it and have gotten a lot of good information.

I have a problem that maybe some of you can answer for me. I bought a flock of 20- 2 year old hens on December 8th. They were suppose to be laying eggs and as of today only 2 of them are laying, and sometimes only every other day. I have a variety of hens, and think many of them may be crosses. I have Austrolop,
Americauna, cuckoo marans, Cochin cross, Naked Neck, and several others that are pretty just don't know what to call them. I don't think the lady I bought them from had any supplemental light on them. As soon as I brought them home I put them in the hen house with about 4 1/2 hours of supplemental light and no w am letting them free range in my yard during the day. I have checked all around the yard to be sure none of them were laying while free ranging and I have found none.

My question is: How long should it take them to adapt to their new home, feed, light, etc. and start laying? I would of thought they would of started by now. I'm feeling that I got "taken" on this flock. Do I need to give them more time? They are really ksgoing through the feed and not giving me any eggs in return.

Thanks!
