***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Pics of what I have been doing in the garden/yard this last month or two.

The bed along the house is bulbs and drought loving perinial/herb/flowers. The far side of the fence line I still need to weed and mulch it is comfrey, this side of the fence is forsythia and strawberries.

The fence line along the lt side is the same forsythia/strawberry bed as the first pic. The back area is raspberries, strawberries, garlic, and will be fig trees.

Long view of the raspberries/strawberries/garlic/figs. Each fence spur is 10 feet, and each space between the spur is 10 feet. This area is very shaded so hoping the berries will like it there.

And speaking of strawberries here is one of the little darlings. lol

80 feet line of fence weeded and mulched 2 feet wide on each side of the fence. Eventually will be highbush blueberries on the east side, forsythia on west side w/ strawberries at the base and garlic. Some forsythia is already planted the rest will be this fall/winter, blueberries will have to wait until I can afford them. This year I am going to plant the whole thing in peanuts, for mass amount of cheap seeds and good high protien fodder for either chickens or if I am able to get the bunny houses finished then the bunnies.
The 4 foot wide bed by the house goes all the way around to the front and then you already saw the other side. This side will be planted in shade loving herbs and mint (maybe if I get enough mint the ants won't come in

) and bulbs (flowers) around front bulbs, blueberries (mostly low bush) and flowers.
I wanr some of your energy.
I never heard of Mint detering ants. It makes sence. Ihave a lot of it; chocolate, (smells like Peppermint Patties) and pineapple, (smells like rubbing alcohol). It is so invasive. When I want it gone fro an area, I just tear away like it is a weed.

NaNa "project pen 11" ! Lol I remember when you started and only had a few bird! You have come a long way and been bitten bad by the bird bug!lol
We have had snow today. Ground was white twice but it melted. Shoul get an inch tonight when it gets colder.
Kass bless your heart that's a lot of work! You will love it tho when you start harvesting all that fruit and veggies! Congrats on getting it all done.
Yes, I noted the "11".
I can relate. I am having a hard time ignoring Blue Marans, and I know I need some more Ameraucanas. Don't tell my Cochins. I know I will get some more LF Cochins - It is destined.

I won the war!!!! The rat is dead!! Luckily I had attached a piece of picture hanger wire to the end of the trap with a staple because she took the cheese and scrambled down the length of the tub. Had to pull her out and finish her with a hammer. Thankfully she was not pregnant and it was obvious she had never had a litter. Cannot understand why any one would keep a rat as a pet....although she was a healthy example...NAH not me!

I have mice in some of my pens. My bantams rarely chase them. Ameraucanas and LF Cochins get them and the LaFlech and my dog are deadly mouse hunters. I got a Tin Cat trap. I have caught as many as 12 mice at one time in it. I used to have sympathy for the mice but not anymore, feed is too expensive to share.

Hi all!

Kass... your yard and you chickens look great! You sure have been taking advantage of the nice days. :)

Nana! I am glad you won the war with the rat. We have a rat hiding under our shed... and it is about to get a gourmet feast with poison wrapped inside. After last summer's battle with rats I can't let one get a foot hold here.

Donnie? Still no word on the foal?

Okla Doodle. I'm glad you got some snow. I hope it was a really pretty gentle snow.... not like the whiteout we had. And we have a chance for more!

I've been busy. My washer broke Tues.... so Wed a friend of mine who really likes to fix things came over, and spent her entire day on the washer. She got the original problem fixed, then we discovered a leak. So my washer was unusable, until today. The other part came in today and I have my first load in!

I built a brooder out of a large tub on Wed. And just in time. My batch of meat chickens that were due to hatch today started pipping Wed Night. Out of 29 eggs, we had 22 hatch successfully. 2 didn't make it out of the shell after pipping. Three are 5 eggs still, and I am leaving the incubator running another day just incase.

I have all my chicks in the brooder and they seem to be doing well, eating and drinking. But I have one that is having a hard time getting around. It is the smallest of the whole batch, and I think its legs are not strong enough to hold it. It realy is so sad. I have the chick in a towel tucked into my coat, and he/she seems content. So Iam trying to look online and see what I can possibly do for it since this is my first hatching.

I know in a few weeks, these are destined for the freezer anyway, but I don't want to lose one early if I can help it.

I believe my daughter and I will be at Pryor show early, then we have to come back to Tulsa by late morning. We have to really push and get the coop finished completely tomorrow. I would preferr Sunday, but my hubby has to work.

How is everyone else?

Angela

I have a metal barrel with a locking lid to store my food in, no mice problems.

I just heard the weather man say we might be getting enough rain next weekend for some rural flooding. we need the rain but please no flooding. more snow in the nw part of the state, The lakes in OkC need that runoff. Blanchard is on water rationing because OkC is, Blanchard gets water from them.

I know my garden is behind most of yalls. DH promises the garden fence will be up by Sunday. Then the planting will begin. We are looking forward to the warm weather & rain in the forecast. The only down side I see is Blanchard auction is Saturday & that parking lot sure turns into a mud hole fast!

Am off to the Pryor show/sale in a few minutes. There ARE some nice large fowl, brought in by a long-time chicken person who is cutting down on his flock. I don't know what all breeds he brought, but there are several, including a nice-looking trio of Buff Orpingtons. If you want to get any, you should get there as soon as you can. It opens at 7 a.m.

Quote: pet rodents are a different catagory- after having pet rats in the past- seems they are a different species than the wild ones- we had done named reepacheep that would sit on the top of his fish tank and catch popcorn thrown at him- but that kind of rat is different than these dang ones we are fighting! i still am battling them, they have decided living under the mobile home tub is a good thing, they have gotten in the liner, and seem immune to rat bait

Well my dishwasher ordeal is ending again, Bosch has decided to buy back this one too. So now I have two dishwasher's that I need to figure out a productive life for (other then the obvious washing of dishes which they appearently are incapable of doing) and start doing research on what dishwasher other then bosch I want to replace it with.
