This is for Sonia and others who rescue baby birds. Several people I know and I keep a can of KAYTEE exact hand feeding formula for all baby birds in our freezers. It is a powder and very easy to mix and feed to baby birds. It is usually not advisable to give them water, as it can easily go down into their lungs, but you mix water with the formula and it fills that need. It is also advisable to talk with a wildlife rehabber in your area, as it is actually against the law for individuals to "save" baby songbirds. Some will advise you on what to do and allow you to take care of them as long as your intent is to reintroduce them to the wild when it is possible. Robin's suggestion is a good one also.
I use the KAYTEE formula for weak chicks and keets as well. It comes in an 18 oz can and will last a long time.
Some of the undesirable birds, such as the brown-headed cowbird, will lay their eggs in other birds nests (never their own), and will often push out the eggs of the original nest builder. The intruder's baby usually grows faster than the rightful nest owner, and will often push the smaller babes out of the nest and/or compete for food so successfully that they cannot survive.
It is very rewarding to actually save these babes, whether with the consent of the rehabber or by taking the babies to them to be raised. Some of the rehabbers will raise them and release them in your area, if it is a good location for them to survive.
