***OKIES in the BYC III ***

This is for Sonia and others who rescue baby birds. Several people I know and I keep a can of KAYTEE exact hand feeding formula for all baby birds in our freezers. It is a powder and very easy to mix and feed to baby birds. It is usually not advisable to give them water, as it can easily go down into their lungs, but you mix water with the formula and it fills that need. It is also advisable to talk with a wildlife rehabber in your area, as it is actually against the law for individuals to "save" baby songbirds. Some will advise you on what to do and allow you to take care of them as long as your intent is to reintroduce them to the wild when it is possible. Robin's suggestion is a good one also.

I use the KAYTEE formula for weak chicks and keets as well. It comes in an 18 oz can and will last a long time.

Some of the undesirable birds, such as the brown-headed cowbird, will lay their eggs in other birds nests (never their own), and will often push out the eggs of the original nest builder. The intruder's baby usually grows faster than the rightful nest owner, and will often push the smaller babes out of the nest and/or compete for food so successfully that they cannot survive.

It is very rewarding to actually save these babes, whether with the consent of the rehabber or by taking the babies to them to be raised. Some of the rehabbers will raise them and release them in your area, if it is a good location for them to survive.

Thanks for the info. I actually would probably have just put the poor thing down if my son had not been right there when it quite literally fell at our feet. Darn near everything is illegal somewhere :/

Nice to see some new folks and Welcome back Bill! Sorry for your flock loss

We have had a busy day...Hubby was sitting on the porch with a loaded gun this morning....he saw that darn coyote back lurking in the high rye just past the yard fence. The sneaky bugger was hunting right by the house and was headed back to the garden. When Roger went in for the gun, the coyote snuck off. Why is it you always see a coyote when you don't have the loaded gun in your hand!
We repaired one water gap today and removed the debris from the other two while it was cool...will work on them tomorrow morning while it is cool.
Hubby is out cutting rye for hay while it is still green. If the heat keeps up he can rake and begin baleing tomorrow after we work on the water gaps.
Still having calves born. One yesterday and one today. We doctored one calf that had a swollen umbilical cord area yesterday. When calves are born in the field, you can't always doctor with iodine and some infection can set in...so now after a shot of Agricillin and ampicillin paste in the navel and a squirt of iodine, he is much better today.
Our calf Sunshine that was stepped on and might lose her foot, is doing good too. She has sloughed off the outer hoof coating and the skin and hair on her ankle....and has lost most of her tail...but she is bucking and growing nicely. She puts some weight on her foot now too.

Most of the Bantams have stopped laying and with the increase in outside temperatures, fertility on the eggs is reducing in the breeding pens. So looks like the eggs in the incubators will be the last hatch until weather cools off. I still have broodie hens determined to hatch those golf balls. I'm going to give them eggs from the bators to let them hatch and raise the chicks.

Hope everyone is enjoying their gardens and the nice weather.

Has anyone else had any problems with receiving checks from new castle auction?
Not with them I did with Blanchard one reason I don't go anymore, Newcastle overpaid me once and I gave it back to them the next sale LOL Speaking of which someone should remind HAVINFUN I haven't forgot about the money I owe him for the pair of birds I got from him, in fact if anyone knows his contact info perhaps they can pm me that so I can remind him myself, he's taller, younger and in better shape than me I don't want him thinking I might stiff him for it LOL

Good Morning friends and neighbors! It`s gonna be another hot one here in the Indian Nations! I`m going to give the pens a good cleaning this morning and then run into town for a minute or two and then I`ll will be back here hiding under the AC! Y`all have a good `n!

It's been about a week since I've posted. I did my best to catch up on all that's been written. Bill - Great to see you online again!

Animals here are doing fine. I'm still working to re-home a few cockerels so they don't have to go to freezer camp. I have a lovely FBCM cockerel [about 8 months old] who would love to have some hens. He's a free-range bug eater right now, so he doesn't have access to any of the ladies. Here's a photo of the guy sampling a watermelon. Send me a PM if you can use a French Black Copper Marans cockerel/roo [free] if you come get him. There will be some folks here on the 19th, so that would be a good day to come pick him up. I'm in Haskell, or about eight miles south of the town of Haskell.

That was a big poultry operation back then. Kinda reminds me of when I was a little kid. My grandma would raise a batch like that of Jersey giants for Cambell soup. Usually between 500 & 600 at a time, all hand fed and watered.

Crap. Last thing. This is Butters:

Can you guys tell me what breed she is? I got her from Orschelns (Easter egger bin). As a chick I thought white rock. Now I have no idea. I got a barred rock and speckled Sussex out of the same bin. :-/

Wouldn't think Orschelns would have rare breeds, but she looks like a New Hampshire to me.

You have some nice looking birds.
