***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I like your coop 5acres. I'm looking to build another one. We're wanting to let our silkies hatch eggs, so need to make a tractor type that has the nesting box on the ground so the chicks don't fall out. We're also thinking about getting some quail. Anyone know anything about raising quail?

That's the same vine I have, and from pics on the internet, wild cucumber was the only thing that looked close to it, but the pics weren't quite clear enough.  How neat that you have passion flower growing wild.  I wonder if it is an "escaped' plant or is actually a native?  I planted it here some years ago, but it went away after only one or two years.  It's so neat that  our "community" here will work to answer questions of about any kind!  Thanks.

From what we can tell, it is native. Yes, love the diverse interaction here.

NanaKat. The trio of CW I got in the raffle. One of those hen is just as sweet and friendly as can be. Every time im in the pen she is there next to me. She likes it when I rub under her wings. Lol

On the 'native flowers' topic....I realized in the last few years of the plants and flowers that are sold in nurseries are growing on our land...like lantana (I've seen only purple), oat grass (found some growing by driveway after buying some at a nursery...grrrr), yarrow, yucca, flowering cactus, etc.

Thank you lonnieandrinda. I have heard of the sex links but am not exactly sure what they are. Do they have the real large brown eggs?

I will check with my husband about it. Sorry it took so long to answer, I don't get online every day.

I have a mystery. When I cook I almost never measure just "eyeball" it. The one exception to that is nobakes. I always meticulously measure each ingredient, even the time I cook by stopwatch. I use the same exact ingredients, the same exact pan and everything but sometimes they come out as soup, sometimes perfection, and sometimes like tonight it makes one big cookie lump before I can even get it out of the pan.

A lot of the difference could be the weather ...... just like with baking

Someone call 911, I think Travis Meyer is having a stroke!!!!!!!! He is saying we are going to get 3-5 inches of rain over the next several days, it is July in OK, I think he must be having "word salad"

We are getting some good rains here, and the good soaking kind! Great for the end of July. Remember last year! UGH! We have had about 4" at our place over the last several days. I'm glad Travis is OK and no stroke. lol

Carburetor spray for wasps. wasp and hornet spray too

Recent wet weather after hot dry will spark growth in the potatoes and fruit trees.

Watch out for black widows...we found two in the outside coop. They are really bad this year. Think I lost a healthy pullet to a spider bite in that pen this week. We have killed several bw in the garden.

A paste of meat tenderizer applied to the wasp or bee sting will break up the toxin and make it quite hurting.

I haven't noticed any black widows here, but am not exactly sure what they look like so will have to google them. I do have a nice brown tarantula that lives in my yard though. :) I see him (or maybe them?) every once in a while. I just let them go about their business eating bugs.

When I went out to the hen house this morning, my Rat Terrier kept point on something in the grass. I thought it was a frog until I heard it cheep and the wings come out. It was a baby bird that must of fallen out of it's nest from all these strong winds. I made him leave it alone and we came in the house. I hope the poor little guy is OK, we just left him alone in case momma was around.

Rain is keeping me inside today. I've been working on lesson plans, and my eyes are starting to cross.

Does anyone speak Chinese? I've ordered a CD from China that has instructions for castrating farm animals. There is a section on chickens and ducks that I'm interested in having translated. I expect to get the disk in the mail in two weeks. Maybe I can find a translator through Craig's List.

I'm going to be selling nearly all of my flock so that I'm only keeping a few laying hens and raising cockerels in batches for caponizing. I'll be taking my extra birds to the sale in Stilwell on August 2, if I can confirm that there is an auction on that date. I'm in the market for barred rock chicks (males only), RIR male chicks, or black sex link male chicks. I want to avoid orphingtons, marans, and australorps. If anyone on the thread has an overabundance of little cockerels, send me a PM. I may end up buying batches from a hatchery if I can't find anyone who's interested in selling a bunch of boy chicks for cheep, cheep, cheep. >(")

since we are playing name that vine lol any guess on this one?

fruit

This is a Passion Fruit vine. They are covered with the noticably different flowers, which I love, then will produce the green passion fruit. As it matures, it turns a shade of purple at which time it is ready to eat. I have not had any of mine grow long enough to turn purple, but a lot of people on my gardening sight have. It IS invasive and you need to keep it under check, like on a fence or something. You will see little sprouts come up from the roots under ground. I just pull them up or mow them when I mow the yard. I have not had any real invasive problems with mine and what I do have I ignore because I think the plant is so unique. It dies back in the winter then comes back in the spring. Hope this helps!
