***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Seriously needing help, here. I need a chicken diaper pretty desperately. I'm going to order one from Amazon, but that'll take days. Does anybody know where I can get one in the Tulsa area?

To tell you why, apparently the larger Dorkings dragged the hay out of the tub my sweet, darling Dorcus sleeps in. He was outside the other night sitting on hard plastic and his feet froze. I'm absolutely sick over it. My poor baby may lose his feet. I've had him inside, but his feet have developed enormous blisters, and I'm going to need to keep the soon-to-be-open sores out of his poo. He's probably going to be inside for a long time if he doesn't succumb to infection.

So, anybody know who might have them? I hope, I hope, I hope.
here is who i go through for anything like that

I could be way off here, but it seems one could be made from two bibs from the dollar store, scissors, and a glue gun. The velcro tabs could cross over the back maybe or just hook over the wings if I am right. If it has ties it could be secured over the back by tying the ends.

That is so cool! Thanks for sharing. Shasta is paying her way now. True5....hatching Delaware Bantams and large Columbian Wyandottes. Incubating large Wyandottes, one Buckeye and Delaware Bantams. On assisting a slow hatching chick...I worry about those too, but have found that helping results in weak chicks that don't make it. I used to gently crack the top circle, keep the membrane moist and let the chick work it's way out. BUT The movement by the chick is necessary for the blood in those visible veins to be absorbed by the chick and for strengthening the legs as the chick naturally struggles to come out of the shell. If the chick can't do it on its own, it will be weaker than the others and can't keep up without vigilent care....now, I let nature take its own course. examine the inside of the shell after the chick is out. If it is mostly clean, the chick was ready to hatch. If the inside is bloody or messy, the chick was not fully ready. For a special egg..do what you think is best and keep a vigilent eye on the baby..let it do the work once the membrane is peeled back.

I called the lady who makes the aprons, and talked to her husband. He said she hasn't made them, but that she can make about anything so he volunteered her to make some. I see you have gotten a pattern, so let me know. I'll pm u with their info if you're interested. I told him he and his wife need to join us here. They raise several breeds, but as Robin always says, silkies have stolen their hearts. They were on the news last summer with their birds and the aprons his wife makes.

Thanks Rinda, Kass and Mitzi!

I tried again about 5pm, hit blood again.

I see what you mean about the paper towels cooling so quickly - I will try having a second one on hand.

Then I read more on the hatching assist thing here in byc.... it advised to only take the shell off ( I am skipping tons of steps here) and then 'moistening' the membrane with bacitracin (It doesn't dry out, and makes the membrane transparent - just like water - so you can SEE if the blood vessels are still flowing!) Much better than hitting one and finding out by all the blood everywhere... (ok, it was not nearly that bad)

Anyway, don't want to go any faster than the chick seems ready for. We have the top off, and the head uncurled. Bottom is still in the egg. Haven't seen the belly yet or the feet. Keep your fingers crossed!

Will give baby another hour or so before messing with it again.
I hope everything works out ok. Said a prayer. It's hard because we love and care so much. One of the reasons I can't use a bator. It's much easier on me to let mamma and nature do it.

Good idea on the bibs!

I got the chick hatched. Its right wing looks a bit like it is on backwards, or sideways. I don't know if chicks can dislocate their shoulders, since they don't have them, but there is a moveable bump where its shoulder would be. Could this be it? If so, can it be fixed?

Here a few photos: The first is of the 'hatch' mates. Two naked necks.

He can raise the wing - when he does both. If it were dislocated, I would think it would not move... Beginning to do the loud chirp and lurch thing...that seems to be good.

When I touched the bump it was hard and moved loosely - not like it was connected to a limb (but maybe it was a loose limb - didn't notice that it moved or anything). He cheeped loudly - like it hurt.... or like it was time to cheep again... who knows. Anatomically, I just know the chicken from what I eat, and I fear I like the thighs much more than wings...and if I do look at a wing - it is already off of the bird.

any ideas?

The chick is holding the wing in such a way that it looks like you would if you held the top of your wrist to your hip. One might do this when reprimanding someone. It sounds weird, but if you try it, you will know exactly the pose that the wing is in. The other wing looks and seems to ack normal. Other than that - and this guy might have a hard time fluffing (but he is still wet, so will give him a chance there) - he looks pretty good - but so darned tiny!

Yes! Please send her my info, send me her info, however it needs to work, please and thank you! Let her know if she can throw one together today I will come by after work to pick it up. I specifically want the kind that has the pouch-like bottom, so it doesn't get smeared all over the bird's rump. Those come with plastic inserts, typically, but if she can't do those so quickly, that's perfectly understandable. They run around $10 without the inserts, $15 with two inserts, but that was on Amazon. And they'll need to be about bantam sized, since he's not fully grown. I know that's a lot to ask on short notice, so if she can't it's entirely understandable.

If she can't do it today, I might pull my sewing machine out of storage. It's been so many years since I last used it, though, I don't even know if it works.
