***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Coral, on pea-combed breeds there's 3 rows of "peas" on a male, the middle row is higher than the 2 side rows. On a female it looks like there's only 2 rows. I don't know if that middle row is missing or just blends in. But if i can see 3 distinct rows with the middle one taller, it's a boy. My Lavander Ameraucana and 1 of my Brown Red Ameraucana boys didn't develop the 3rd raised row until about 4 wks old. So I was wrong about those at hatch but all the other baby chicks I've guessed at I was right about, probably 30 altogether counting auction chicks. You don't really get a chance to look close at auction chicks with reading glasses and a flashlight  S you just take what ypu get in the box.

Hey Robin-how are the new Seramas settling in?! Have you introduced Ebony to her new boy yet? This hen I ended up keeping here (because the male was making her scream) is a very dominant hen with other girls. I was hoping she'd get along with another of the girls and go in with that pair but she may have to be kept by herself. I don't seem to have any other Serama boys as gentle with girls as Channing is (so far). Have you ever had the problem of Seramas being too rough on the girls?

@Ksane the quotes around "Ameraucana" are because if I hear "Ameraucana" from anybody but a show breeder, I automatically assume "Easter Egger, possibly removed from Ameraucana parents so far it might resemble a pigeon".

rofl!! I missed the quotes! But I see we're on the same page  I love Easter Eggers, one of my favorites-don't get me wrong.

Boaz was that way with his girls, i tried him with OEG and that worked, but the darn girl kept going broody, so he is now with the bantam favarolle Mary- perfect match, he can't hurt her, and he gives her treats so she is happy.

haven't introduced Jojo to her yet, want to give him some settling in time, the cages are wonderful! The two pairs finally relaxed and the one boys comb is back to the normal color- i may put the younger roo with Honey, she may settle him down, spent some time holding him tonite, he is pretty people shy

on your little hen, you might try to pal her up with another hen to help her adjust, then introduce them to a roo

Just made it home, it is slick out there guys, be careful stay off the roads if you don't need to be on them. I was on I40 starting at Warner and driving to Henryetta, the roads had a thin ice the entire way, cars and semi's wrecked all the way, the roads are worse towards Henryetta.

We have a windchill of -5 and when I opened the screens on the coops this morning only a few ventured out for warm water. They didn't want to come out for their scratch treat either..so I will try again with the warm water around noon. Snow was driving straight across instead of down.

Lost two fresh hatched babies under a new Momma hen last night .. She was sitting on top of them ...the others were under her wings. Also found a young Delaware bantam pullet dead in a nest box. She wasn't near a point of lay yet, so don't know what happened to her. All the other inside birds are doing great. Really cute to see so many little faces peeking out from under their mothers.

Wormed everything yesterday, put fresh straw in all the outside coops and moved the feeders inside the outside coops, emptied cleaned and refilled all the outside waterers to help all the birds thru this cold snap. The Cochins were nestled down in the hay and looked like they were so comfy.

Hope everyone stays warm and safe today. It is slick out with the thin layer of ice...deceptive.

We're fogged in. I hope everyone got some rain last night. Maybe the ice and snow predicted for the remainder of the weekend will miss us

I'm not going to be able to walk the Camino this summer due to conflicting dates (ordination and end of school), so I'm consoling myself with a new project. Kass is going to let me adopt a NN cockerel who carries the scaleless gene. I've ordered some NN eggs from a breeder who has crossed NN with Marans, and she has two generations laying dark, dark brown eggs. I've also ordered some NN eggs for a breeder who has jubilee NN and mottled NN. The possibilities, ohhhh the possibilities.

This creeping crud has finally knocked me out. I ran a fever last night, so I'm going to have to skip our granddaughter's birthday party. I don't want to share this with anyone. It's MINE! Mine I tell you! I know others have been free in sharing their CC, but I'm going to keep it all to myself

< Blarf blarffff snunnnggg blarf.
Hope you start feeling better. I have been battling the crude all week. So far so good..

Good to hear you are getting over it! Remember the girl you gave me,Collette?? She has worked her way up the order of things and is Galahads main girl! Talk about the odd couple

Hehehehe! Love is blind... I have a production red hen that my male peacock is in love with..

Great info!!! How long after worming do you wait to eat eggs (if at all), and what do you do with the medicated eggs?
two weeks from what I have read! Feed them to the dogs and cats or compost them.

Could not begin to tell you, I do not eat my eggs, my birds are for a very different purpose.
Yeah because it would take 100 eggs to make an omelet from your birds Carl..

Oh man I have just had a cruddy cruddy week with work stuff and now it is seeping into my farm life lol.
So my not so good hatch...I had 4 eggs that were set one day later than the main hatch. 2 of those have pipped. So I guess that is good news? We will see how it develops. I saw your note Carl, I will take a look in the eggs tomorrow if nothing develops. Just in case I had a drop in temp I didn't notice. I am using Grace's forced air sportsman and I can't hear chirping thru it and I hatch in cartons so they don't really have movement.

But the really sad news is that I lost my handsome splash roo that I bought from Nankat at last years poops! So sad...He was such a looker and was just getting to breeding age so I can't even create any kids from him. I will throw a few of the eggs in the bator in hopes that they were fertile but I never saw him do the deed. I have another blue cochin roo but the splash roo was better looking.

Sorry about your roo!

It was icy coming back from Kansas yesterday but not too bad. Still saw a lot of accidents on the roads coming home.. It is super cold out there and there is thunder besides the snow. So much for little or no accumulation like the Weather Center said yesterday..

@Cjarvis and @NanaKat how much are you paying for the OTC feed in Shawnee? Thanks for the tip about the wormer feed. I was just looking at that in Tractor Supply. The CTC/denegard feed is $30 for 50 pound bag

.
I found a pig starter in Chickasha that had ctc/denegard (tiomulin?) in it. I did some research and found reports that the ctc/den mix was much better absorbed into the blood than the OTC. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised about the company that sponsored that research...
Anyway, the stuff was 48 a bag.l

@Cjarvis , was this used in conjunction with other antibiotics? I have some birds on cephalin and ciproflexin. I also have some that I was planning on administering Tylan to, as the other stuff did not clear it for them.

Tell you - I have at least 11 sick birds, and last night in the coop - it seemed as though all I heard was coughing and unhappy breathing. :( I think my only HEALTHY birds are the chicks in the brooder. I have a few trios of healthy show birds, but with the weather like it is, there is no where to put them where they aren't exposed to sick birds. l

I have not used the Tylan yet. The 'sick' (kennel) birds have been on the pig food for 2 days. I have some birds that are responding to the cipro/ceph combo - but others not so much.

I am thinking, that at the least, I should switch my entire coop to the pig feed? That will be expensive.... but this individual treatment stuff and 'isolation' .... I have no more kennels, no more heat sources, no more porch and no more ... well, you know....getting closer to some kind of limit.

On a cheery note - the paint and black silkies that are the kid's 4-H project did quite well at our livestock show and bonus auction yesterday - as did one of our longhorn heifers. .... oh yes, which started coughing and runny nosing yesterday too - hope it is the weather - but if not still requires a lot less effort to treat.. 'sigh'

Off to check on a very prego cow.... will deal with chickens later. Thanks for any help and input!
